Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

ooo - :drool - that's great inspiration for a Christmas present for another cheese-lover I know. You've even got me contemplating a daytrip to Borough Market for some edible Christmas shopping :gig
All their other cheeses are good but I REALLY recommend the Cheesemaker's Special. They don't always have it in stock at Borough Market though.

If you're buying from somewhere that also sells other Sussex producers' cheeses, Pevensey Blue, Seven Sisters and Golden Cross are all really good too.

is that the youngsters who don't yet know their arse from their elbow, or old and wizened hens?
Youngsters here. I do realise they're not a big enough sample to mean much; and I haven't spent enough time observing to say they definitely haven't ever made a similarly optimistic, but misguided, attempt to grab a bee.

Honestly can't remember for sure whether I've seen older birds do it in the past or not.

I must owe some tax for all the food/feed talk. So here are some hen spurs; Aberglasny's, Sully's and Rhondda's:

(R has got 2 too but the angle hides the one on her right leg).

Maybe Shad will allow taxes in the form of food pictures…just this once. I want to see one of these flammable cakes and some homemade cheese 😬
The cakes don't get set on fire - that's xmas puddings! (Which are also great as leftovers the next morning, fried up with bacon and eggs.)

Buying rennet would require a trip into town but I can probably pick some cheese up this afternoon from someone I know or the shop down the road... It might even be acceptable as tax if I photograph the chickens eating some. They're already getting ox liver trimmings later on, they'll think xmas has come early if they get cheese as well!

I restarted my kefir culture a few days ago and the chickens are loving it.
They seem to have hollowed out poor Mr. Pumpkinhead (the kefir soaked feed is in a bowl to the side of the pumpkin).
I am glad Pooh is getting stuck in - she is still clinging to her one tail feather!
