Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

You know the old saying, “There are no atheists in foxholes”? Well, at least around here, it appears that there are no flock divisions in bitter cold.

I started cramming the older pullets into the Nestera last Sunday night at lockdown. Tuesday night I started going back out at 10 pm or so and cramming them back in, although usually 1 or 2 of the olders had stayed in. Friday night I started putting the back on the Nestera to keep them in (it’s off during the day, door always closed.) Tonight I went out and everyone had put themselves to bed in the Nestera and gave me that chicken-y look of “human, what took you so long?”

Temp when I got up: 31°. 29° by the time I left for church. 21° around 4 pm. 18° now (6:30 pm.) Forecast overnight low: 11°. (In °C, roughly: -0.6°, -1.6°, -6°, -8°, -11.7°, respectively.)

🥶🥶🥶🥶🥶

- Oh, yes, and 20 mph gusts still going on, down from 30-40 during the night, although still nothing like what Shad puts up with on a daily basis.

9C, cloudy with bursts of sunshine. The wind though, It's given up on the 40mph to 50mph gusts and gone for a constant 20mph to 30mph.
They did come out for half an hour but late afternoon saw a drop in temperature and colder wind and they retreated to under the coop. I didn't bug them. It wasn't nice weather to be out in. I did some digging mainly to keep warm.:D

No sign of Mrs Chew a Coop for three days now. The two small grey rats that come from the field next door now number one. They take the food I sweep out from the coop from the chicken shite buckets. I don't often see them in the run.

Glais tipped over the food tray again.

A jackdaw flew a couple of feet above his head making for the gate. Can you get diazepam for chickens?:p
Maybe I should make a post asking for the correct dosage and watch the thread burn.

Well, at least you’re safe from jackdaw predation!

The forecast was wrong. It wasn’t 11° when I went out.

It was 10°.

Once I came back inside from letting them out, I went promptly back to bed!
