No, I don't think Mauss got it wrong
One of the (to me) most eye-catching of many, many, eye-catching ornaments at Chatsworth (which we visited for the 1st time this summer) was this gift from Czar Nicolas.

Apparently he had been slated to visit the house, so its owners had initiated a lot of upgrades intended to impress (including of a fountain, which served for architectural willy-waving in those days). But, for whatever reason, he couldn't make it, so sent this in his stead.
Looks like a shipwreck to me, but maybe I'm reading too much into it :D

This year I did cake and pudding
You showed us the cake; I'm intrigued; what was pudding? We never have room for dessert. Not even a wafer-thin mint :p
if the eldest would let us near the stove.:D
You know what they say: too many cooks spoil the broth.
All the above.
How disappointing.

I find the Christmas commercialism disgusting and repulsive; the advertisements annoying and manipulative, even though I don't buy any of that :ducanyway.
It’s the bad music starting around Thanksgiving in every store that makes me lose my mind!

I can count on my fingers the Christmas carols I actually like. Most of them need a good choir.
When I go nuts is when I realize that I’m singing the alto part of a butchered carol. 🤪

It’s the - I guess you’d call it Christmas pop - that drives me bananas. Including music from artists in my generation, not just the newer stuff. We need another Nat Cole, Johnny Mathis, Andy Williams! - at Christmas, anyway.

:old :old :old

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everybody on the thread. Holidays can be terrible but I like the "no work" part where I can catch up with my work ...

Tax: I finally did some kind of documentation of Inky's bad molt, and submitted it as a molting picture entry: https://www.backyardchickens.com/th...cken-molt-pictures-2025.1675964/post-28965657

Here is a bonus picture of Inky on Nov 25th (with Light being a round ball :D)

I’m happy to celebrate it in a relaxed way, but the last three years have wiped it out. 2 years ago Covid, last year norovirus, this year flu plus an unspecified GI bug.

We’re gathering at noon tomorrow, outdoors, and moving right along. 🤞🤞🤞
So my son came down with the GI bug this morning and is stuck in Knoxville, so those still standing upright are going to fling packages at one another in thirty minutes, then run like hayull.

I found this out as I was almost finished cooking. Now to find room in the fridge to store the food for some undetermined future date to eat together. 🌲🤢🌲

Beginning to think Christmas in July is a healthier option

Can you freeze some of it for simply reheating?
