A lovely afternoon after some rain this morning. Two hours today. Going by the weather forecast I expected to find everything frozen but I couldn't see nay signs of ice.
I got them out. I'm tired of seeing Mow and Sylph under that coop. I don't travel right across Bristol day in, day out to look at chickens in a coop and run!
Moulting is mostly over so that excuse is gone. I can tell from their rekindled interest in food.
Once out they stayed out but didn't venture far from the chairs. Glais, as usual, tore around for a bit then stuck closer to Mow and Sylph, and me. It's the and me bit that's the problem. They will follow Glais once on the field to their favourite shelter spot under the fruit bush clump, but not onto the field. I have to take all three out there. WTF happened to them? Mow would have headed off to all her favourite foraging spots, with Sylph in tow. Then it was a matter of worrying that Mow in particular would wander too far/out of sight and having to go and fetch her.
My friend who keeps the Light Sussex chicken told me with some amusement that I now had backyard chickens and should fit right in on that site you post on. He calls BYC Backside Chickens.
Being a helpful sort of chap he also said "You should have stuck to the plan and got more Ex Battery hens who have in my experience and from learning from others always appreciate their new found freedom." Well, I've heard similar from others who know me and what I want for chickens. My goal was/is to improve the lives of a few chickens and I'm not convinced I'm doing that at the moment.
It may all come right when Mow and Sylph start to lay eggs again. For a start they will want to mate and they should also want all those bugs and minerals out on the field. Will Glais learn from me taking them out in the meantime?
Psycho Chew A Coop hasn't chewd anything since I meshed her last session. She was alive yesterday when I saw her slip down the side of the new fence.
