Shaken up by deformed chick- assisted hatch.

I've had a chick dry this way. I just wet it down a bit with a warm wash cloth and put it under a heat lamp to dry. I have no clue as to why that happens, but it's happened to me.
The deformities don't look all that bad at all. I believe he/she will do fine :)

No the deformities keep looking better and better! So glad I let it be. Seriously it could not lift its head, like it had wry neck for the entire night. And it only started walking as well as the other chicks about 2 hrs ago. It's amazing to see it transform. Maybe that long wing will heal itself too.

Ok everyone, just took another chick out of the bator and I don't think this one will heal itself- maybe you can tell me what to do. This one was from the other group of eggs. I was about to take a pic when my phone died.
Anyway, it's toes are curled in and its feet are sideways. It can't stand. It was a very quick, and easy hatch for it. I did not assist this one- that is something I would only do if I was certain they couldn't get out by themselves and it had been more than a day and a half since pipped. Isn't there a way to stint feet like this? This chicks feathers also dried wet looking.

Seriously, is this something I did wrong in the incubation proccess? :(

no nothing you did could have been a little behind all the rest on cooking still growing if you know what I mean. It happens all the time in wildlife but the mother would have eaten it if it were weak. But looks healthy now maybe name your chick Lucky? That can be used as a girl or boy name. My lucky I have has to be put down :( he or she when came out of egg can only walk on one foot. I wanted to see if I could fix it but I can not. The poor think has to hop around. It is near the joint were it's leg comes out if formed a blister leaking from it leaning on it to try to walk. I thought at first maybe a sprained leg but nope not at all. I feel bad but it is mean for me to make it live like that and suffer in pain. When other chicks bump into it we have to go and pick it up and place him back on tummy.I was hoping for a easy fix but it's like it didn't grow a tendon or something really wrong. My hubby said he will do it for me I can't watch. I think I would freeze up on doing it myself. I have went hunting before for deer but I just can't do it. It was my little baby and my pet I don't really know how else to explain it. I sure do love the poor little guy. I have been trying to distance myself from him. Don't blame yourself at all YOU DID NOTHING WRONG OK!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you for that. I can't help but feel guilty now that 2 of my chicks have problems. I told you I would post you the pics of the other 4 that hatched. She sent 11 but one was cracked, another smashed, so that left me with 9. I got 5 hatches. I don't know if there will be anymore but I they are so adorable! I just wish I had a silkie!

Everyone, this is the second chick that I asked about- the one born with problem feet. Can I stint them?

Also wanted to let everyone know Hugh is officially eating and drinking!

I've stinted crooked feet successfully - after 4 days the chick was 100%. It started by walking on the sides of the feet and is now fully functioning. I wish I had have taken before and after pictures, but I didn't.

The leg issues can be caused by too high or too low humidity or too high of a temperature. Do you have a separate hydrometer from your actual incubator? What was the humidity from day 1 - 18 and during lockdown/hatch?

I had a chick that had feet just like that. i took a piece of tape for each foot and flattened his feet out on it and left it for a few days and now you'd never know he had anything wrong with him!

OOO...they are so stinkin' cute! makes me want to hatch some more! lol

Hugh is doing awesome! All of Hugh's abnormalities seemed to have fixed themselves! Hugh is still teeny tiny but makes up for it in energy. He/she is eating, drinking, can run like the dickens, and peeps the loudest. The only weird thing is the way Hugh's feathers are growing in, differently than the other chicks, but I don't see that being an issue. Here's a couple pictures of Hugh. Much fluffier after a sponge bath!
The other chick has band aids on its feet and though I am hopeful the chick seems very lethargic.
