Good luck!

Gatorade claims to have electrolytes. It has 110 mg. of sodium and 60 mg. of potassium.
Yogurt has 120 mg of sodium, and 340 mg. of potassium.
If my chickens needed some quick electrolytes, I will continue to feed yogurt cause my chickens will readily eat it.

I'm sorry if my post was taken wrong. I wasn't saying Poly-Vi-Sol was a substitute for electrolytes I was replying to the question of whether electrolytes were the same thing and could be used instead of Poly-Vi-Sol. I also wasn't saying it had B1 and could help with neurological problems.

I was only trying to help someone who was desperately posting last night about a sick chick and no one was helping. Diana I don't claim to be an expert and give you all the credit. I usually post the Poly-Vi-Sol advice because in an emergency it certainly can't hurt to administer and often helps.

As usual, I stand corrected. Guess I'll just stay off the Emergency section and let you answer them all because lately, and twice today, you've gone back and quoted me and said how I was wrong.

Ruth, you did help Kim last night, you were one of the few that were there for her. Please continue to offer info because alot of people like your advice.

no offense meant to anyone but felt it important that when someone is given advice to give electrolytes that they understand that this is a specific product (and not just salt and potassium containing food product > the proper type of sugar for instance and all in the correct ratios to each other is very important > even the type of electrolyte can sometimes be of huge importance however that is too complicated to go into here) and to be used in specific instances.
It is very easy to get confused about things like this and when one is advised to give electrolytes you would not want them to go out and buy yogurt and polyvisol instead of Durvet.
( I was very short as I had little time and hope noone has taken offense at the shortness of my answers sometimes.)

No offense, I know electrolytes are more than just sodium, potassium, and chloride. But in a pinch, it'll do until you find something proper.
Gatorade has too much sugar, and not enough sodium, potassium and chlorida. Pedialyte has no sugar, which is good because sugar (glucose) is not good for dehydration. Yogurt has a goodly amount of sodium, potassium, and chloride, some nutrition. The 3 lytes are the most important ones when it comes to dehydration, the rest can wait till you get to the feed store for a pack of full lytes.
I have also heard of giving poly vi sol right away PLUS lytes, if it's a neuro problem due to a vitamin insuffiency, esp. B, it's a good thing.

I just wanted to add that you sounded like you had a bad day. I have taken your advice before, and you do offer good advice, and I will certainly appreciate your advice in the future.

I got great news!!

I just took a good look at her and she is fine. She shook for several days, but I was out there a few minutes ago and not even the slightest vibration.

I'm thinking she gorged on pine shavings, hence the slightly large crop I mentioned. Maybe a crop full of shavings(and poo) kinda messed her up for a few days.

What do ya think? Could filling up on pine shavings and poo cause her to have neurological problems? She did kind of act like a drug addict, shaking, frantic behavior, diving for shadows and corners, running to hide under all the other chicks. I got none of that behavior tonight from her, I opened the cage and she stood up straight and tall, looked me in the face without vibrating or shaking and then, ran like hell.

LOL. All the signs of a healthy normal chick of mine. haha

Thanks everyone for helping through my panic and this very odd behavior..

If she was eating the shavings and poo instead of her food, she wasn't getting the proper nutrition and that would definitely cause nurological problems.

I know I start acting goofy when I've eaten a bunch of empty calories...

Glad she's doing better!

Wolf-Kim I'm so happy to hear your chick is doing better!!

Sadly I had to end my Rose's life yesterday. She had a seizure in the morning and lost her ability to walk. She was 10 months old and such a love. I miss her. I placed her in the garden in a corner and I'm planting a climbing rose over her. Silly huh. These chickens I tell ya, they are just like a part of the family.

I hope the best for you and yours
