Hey, thanks to everyone for sharing their chicken treat recipes! I have one to share as well.
Living in the north can be hard on chickens (we live in the Yukon Territory, Canada) especially in the fall and winter, and even more so if the birds are molting.
I have created this recipe to help the birds regrow their feathers in just such times and they are crazy for it!!
Mix in chicken dish:
1 cup oats
1 cup dried meat (we use dried moose meat that I grind up in the food processor, a good alternative could be venison jerky as long as it is un-flavoured and unsalted)
if you do not have this type of meat you could substitute with unsalted canned salmon or tuna or even dried mealworms
1 cup wheat berries
1 cup cracked corn
1/4 cup melted bacon grease
1/2 cup frozen or dried berries (unsweetened)
warm water as needed for right consistency
I designed this recipe to help the birds regain their feathers and put a bit of fat on before the weather gets really cold (it gets to -40 degrees celsius here in the winter!) It includes protein, fat and carbohydrates in a combination that the birds love. It is also very easy to make, all you have to do is mix it up in a bowl, and voila! Chicken heaven.
