I would like to know if they can free range with the chickens and ducks or is it best to keep them fenced? Turkeys that is. Thanks.

There is a concern about blackhead disease when they are raised with chickens, but I've checked that out with local breeders, and it hasn't been a problem in my area.

How do i find out if Blk head is a problem in my area? thinking about turkeys for next spring and trying to research as much as possible till then. Looking at Bourbon Red or nargansett, or others if you can give me some ideas. By the way your is beautiful, what breed?

Chickens often are carriers of Blackhead disease, and are immune to it. It's in their poo, and when the turkeys step on it, they can catch it. It's like an internal organism/parasite type thing that affects the liver. I researched first, by asking a farmer friend of mine who raised his chickens and turkeys together, and then I talked with two breeders who raised them together. I think there is number to call for information like that in your state regarding livestock, but I'm not sure what it's listed under.

I just researched Blackhead too, so that I know the symptoms, and I can take care of it if I see it, but my turkeys are 7 months old now and very healthy.

If you have the room, it would probably be best to keep them separated and be 100% safe, but for me, it's fine.

OH, I'm sorry ! My tom is a Royal Palm, and the female behind him is a Blue Slate.

Thanks, I forgot I also have 1 gander thats family is 10 Muscovy ducks, do you see any problems with Turkeys and geese?or have you ever had the 2 together?
also forgot to say I'll look into Royal palm and Blue Slate also, I don't even know a this point if there are anyone in my part of the US that sells turkeys. thats on my agenda also.

Or buying eggs maybe something to look into also. I have chickens and ducks that love to brood.

Miss Lydia, I couldn't say whether it's OK to raise turkeys with ducks or geese, since I don't have those. So sorry. You could buy your turkey poults from a hatchery, if there are no turkey breeders near you. I'll bet you could find some though, I you googled "NC turkey breeders".
