My god Gary, do you handle ALL of your birds daily? They have got to be the friendliest most calm chickens I've ever met!

No, especially not this year, these guys pretty much raised themselves, (my wife and daughter would dispute that). I spent way less time, because of my knee, than ussual with these guys. Like I've said before on these boards, life is too short to put up with crazy, flighty, or mean birds. Having breed them for so long I may have been biased toward preferring the calmer birds for my breeders, but Brahmas in general are such sweethearts. All you wyandotte breeders look away from the screen now, but I could not get rid of the BLRW male fast enough that I used to start my blue laced red Brahma project. It probably was just a individual personality thing as I doubt so many people would be raising dottes if they all acted like him,(unless of course they had not experienced Brahmas), and I still think I can see some of his personality traits carrying over into some of his decendants what 4 generations later. I look at type, color, and personality when choosing my breeders.

big medicine, I think you just got a bad roo, I've never had a mean blrw roo and I've had lots. now buff orps, my hatchery one was rotten and I alway hear how sweet they normally are! I will say the brahmas I had were really sweet birds, they just ate too much for me to keep them.

I figured as much. It wasn't so much mean, just very aggressive and rough with his hens, and spooky(climbing the walls or fence if you crowded him in the pen).

Can't argue about the feed bill.

The raccoons got my last polish hen.
What is so crazy is that at the weekend I had got a bunch of 8x5x4 foot half inch wire breeder cages to keep the pullets safe while we are building another coop, but had not transferred the last of them as the cage needed a door flap. The birds were in a pretty good strong cage that had been fin up till now, but somehow the raccoon must have squeezed its hand in between the bars and grabbed a handful of bird.
We heard something at about 4 am and ran out in time for dd to see the beast make off. Had to put the hen to sleep
