So, Lovin, how long after my chicks are born can I tell if they are barred or not? I never had a barred chick before. I had a cuckoo pair, (Marans) . They were easy to tell because the male isn't as dark as the female. Put them side by side and it was easy to tell. But I didn't get them til they were about 2 weeks old and they had some feathers, not just fuzz then.

OK - TEST YOUR SKILL

These sf's are almost 5 weeks old. I will show you girls, then boys, then the big question mark.

Did any of you guys (Natalie, Ilove ?????) sell me an egg that could hatch into an silkie/ EE, off white in color with some brown flecks??? It (she I believe) has muffs and silkie feet and is sooo soft.

Light brahmas were actually used to create the coloring for light sussex. Now they are used for breeding diversity with the coronation as there are so few still in the US, which probably explains the prices. I paid $72.50 for 6 eggs, (she said she was sending extras) from someone here on BYC. I would much rather buy from someone on this site rather then eggbid. Too be honest, I was not planning on doing coronations until possibly next year but I could not resist the price with how much they are going for on ebay or eggbid for mostly splits, a coronation roo over light sussex hens (I have seen very few that have went for under a hundred dollars).

I should get 2 to 1 pures with these eggs. Now pray for a safe journey across the country.

K, Sem. Here's my disclaimer: I'm learning and quite ignorant, so take it for what it's worth. (Ain't gonna be much)

Color wise, I'd say male. Too much black to make me think female.

Feather shape, I'd say female. Too rounded and direction of them, if it were an Orp or RIR would definitely scream female I think. However, the neck area is not as fully feathered and I can't see any pointy/shiny stuff there so that's leading me even more toward female.

Comb- pink early, I'd say male.

So over all, my gut's telling me... this is a hermaphrodite. There. I'm sure that's right. Keep it. You can get eggs and fertilize them all in the same package.

This is the toughest one I've had.

Aren't they. I love that first boy chick who looks like he's been caught in the middle of something mischievous. Looks like he might have quite the personality!

I'm gong to have to say boy as well. Let's see, 3 coop/pens, 5? boys. Hmmm. I have 15 grown girls, and 10 more girl chicks. So each boy can have 5 girls or.............a bachelor pad.........or.................
