I doubt it was the bear. I think most chickens try to hide if they're dying. And they flatten when they die. I lost one 3 years ago, and my 8 Polish chicks, 3 years ago-I noticed were throwing the chick feed around but not really eating it. I grinded chick feed much smaller, and they turned into vultures, I think the crumbles were too big. Now I always grind the crumbles down, or offer wet mash for the first 7-10 days, and my thoughts were confirmed again when I didn't grind the crumbles for the car egg, and noticed that his crop was never full. I ground it down, and his crop got full the same day.

Check their crops. If they are empty, they may not be able to eat the crumbles, they might be too big.
I was very sad when my first chick died. Sorry, I know you're sad too, whatever the reason.

the crumbles are really tiny-actually Id call it "dust" seriously-I was actually complaing that they werent crumbles and so dusty:-( So see her flattened just broke my heart--I even snuggled her when I picked her up--the only good thing I can say at the moment is that Ill be getting BLRW chicks in 3 weeks...Lets hope I can keep them going! No teddy bears anymore:-( Just in case..

Do you guys have several different brooders, one for each hatch?

I have two week old chicks in one brooder and 5 day old chicks in another...can I put them all together? When the newest ones hatched I put two in with the two week olds and they seemed VERY UNHAPPY about it. When the newer ones are a bit older, can I try again?

The cochins are a couple of weeks younger than the oegbs, but much larger. I think there is a dispute over who is king on their side of the brooder. The cochin isn't taking this laying down, I just think, as I matter of fact I know, that the oegb has a little Attila the Hun complex. I don't have anyplace to put either one, unless I add them to the brahma side of the brooder from which I separated them because the really big chicks were running over everybody and hogging all the food.

Oh, I don't know. Somebody? I would guess it just depends how the chicks react.

SIlkies I put in together no matter what age and have never had a problem-the others I put together no more than 3 weeks apart when chicks
