oh, and the sweet man told me to just buy chicks instead of spending all that money on eggs just to be disappointed, so I ordered 20 black ameraucana chicks from Paul Smith and waiting on a delivery date
oooh, I just realized I'm gonna need a bigger brooder

He was supposed to come home on leave some time in Sept, I figured I had PLENTY of time to thin them out, figure out what I want.......now he said they may change it to July

We dispatched our mean tom early this morning. I say we, but I had nothing to do with it...couldn't bear to watch or have any part of it even though he was just plain ole mean and would come after us anytime he could. Greg couldn't do the deed either...he asked his brother to do it. After that, Greg had no problems with dealing with the feathers...etc...After being cleaned he weighed in at 18 lbs! Which, IMO, is pretty darn good since he was not eating as well because he was wanting to breed....and being a Standard Bronze.

Hi there sonew, I just read this about the pasty butts and wanted to respond. I also ordered chicks from them and most of them got pasty. I cleaned them twice and now they are fine. I thought maybe it was due to them getting chilled during shipment as well. I also increased my heat on them and they have been fine ever since. So I guess I don't know if they just got over it or if the extra heat helped. Just thought I would share this tid bit of info. All of my chicks that I have hatched out here at home have never got pasty bums so I am leaning more towards the shipping stress/chilled aspect.
