phage, I hope it makes it. we just amputated the broken leg from a chick, I worried I'd kill it with the anesthesia but I didn't and 1 week later, it's getting around great, they're tougher then we give them credit for.
Now you guys have me wondering.
Some of Nats chicks went to a real real nice family with 2 little girls. I had not realized that one of the chicks they took was the one that I had wondered if it had a twisted beak. I was looking for it to take a pic, and figured it had got getter. Anyways they called back after a week complaining about it so I said I would absolutely replace it.
But she did not get back to me. Apparently her DH said that it would give the wrong message to the kids to return it because it was not perfect (LOVE that guy).
However I got another call from them: another of Nat chicks had got injured. They did not know how. Could they get another bird of the same age. I got them to bring the injured bird back (unfortunately about a week now after the injury) and gave the little girl one of onthespots super fluffy gorgeous MCF that I was going to keep for myself. She was pretty happy. I said I would try and fix the injured chick.
Having seen enough racoon attacks I am pretty certain that this bird must have had its leg pulled through the chicken wire. it looked as if the hock joint had been dislocated and was now not reducible and that the hip joint was totally pulled out and disrupted. The foot was facing backwards. The chick was very active and could lurch around and is always the first to food.
Ended up splinting he legs so that its feet face face forward in the hope that the hip joint would heal. No chance. Yesterday it looked better (foot sort of facing forward sometimes ) but thigh bone (femur) is not attached to the pelvis in any functional way. It gets about fine by lurching. I have no idea if it is in pain or not but it cannot be comfortable.
To make it worse I think it is a roo but it is really hard to tell (one of Nats specials- you cant tell for sure till it crows!!).
The owner rang back to find out how it was. I explained, and she suggested just putting it to sleep. This seemed reasonable but I have not been able to bring myself to do it, and the longer I leave it the harder it gets. I cant keep it, and I cannot see that anyone would want it.
What should I do girls, What should I do??????
