I'm so sorry! Poor babies! I have to agree that whatever it is will be back now that it has found a plentiful food source.

Is that light brahma one of mine from Mary??? Do we know what is up with Mary? did I miss something?

The Brahma looks rooish to me. (sorry

) My girls do not have the points on the comb yet. mine are 13 weeks.

That's OK. It looks roo-ish to me, roo. I think he is also showing a roo-ish length of black tail feathers. I don't know if it is one of yours or not. Can I buy a started pullet from you at chickenstock? If not, how much does a dozen eggs go for?

Nat said roo on Mabeline and I do believe she is correct. Little hoser started w/ that tail feather and has started looking more rooi-sh everyday! I guess he is now Mark.

I can't tell with the cochin, yet, but it does have a big head! If those legs sprout I'll know I'm hosed.
My big black frizz cochin had huge legs and feet and a really small comb for a VERY long time. The comb turned red and never got all that big. But then he started crowing!

I'm almost positive Nadine is a pullet.

I'll be keeping them all until I am positive one way or the other.

Mary and I would do better if we just picked randomly instead of trying to figure out who is what gender!

Nobody knows what happened to Mary. She just kind of dropped off the map.

Do ya'll want us to bring a pinata? Something for the kids to do if the grown-ups don't care to. Or something for every one to take a swing at! Ya'll would have to supply the baseball bat - I don't have one. If the grownups decided it was theirs, I was thinking of getting a buch of those little bottles of booz to stuff it with.

I'm not sure how much breakage would occur!

OMG BRIN!!! Grown up pinata woot! omg omg... haven't done one of those in years!

Is this happening during the DAY when the birds are out? Do your birds get locked in a hen house at night?

A bird of prey would leave a distinctive circular pattern of feathers at the impact site. A fox would take multiples to store and eat later. I don't know if a fischer cat would take multiples or not. Weasels might kill and maim multiples for fun. Racoons would kill multiples but most likely eat the heads and usually only attack at night. Dogs and coyotes would just create murder and mayhem. All of these predators are smart enough to observe and to attack when you are not around or there isn't a lot of activity nearby.

Now that your chickens are discovered as a food source by something, you can take it for granted that whatever it is will come back when the fancy strikes it. All your birds have big targets on them from now on. I would keep them in a coop and lock them in a secure place at night.

both times it has happened before dusk, while still light out. My dad thinks coyotes, saw one a couple miles from our house last week. There were just poofs of feathers but there was a print in the sand that looks like a narrow dog print(which is why my dad also thinks coyote). I found one of the missing girls without a head today...went up the road to visit a neighbor and saw feathers, got out of the car and found her. I am just sick, she was our first hen from the first batch we ever hatched. She was a pretty big girl(australorp x blue andalusian) so whatever took her was definitely good sized, dad thinks it got spooked which is why she was dropped. He is actually thinking maybe multiple coyotes. I was starting to think maybe my neighbor was sending his bird dog over to pick them off but if he was going to do that I know he wouldn't have let his dog eat my girls head and he would have bagged them up to conceal. Also figured out the other missing girl is my appenzellar spitzhauben(my eldest daughter's chicken). As of right now I am thinking about just getting rid of them all. All of the kids personal birds are gone and my favorites are all gone. Just doesn't seem like so much fun anymore. My chickens are miserable as they are contained in the small pen next to their secure coop, it is only 16 x 10 and they aren't happy, they have been free range their whole life.....I only have 13 laying hens now, had 22
sad.png
I have a few cuckoo marans that I only have for the eggs as they aren't as people friendly as my ameraucana....I think I have 2 wheaten ameraucana and not sure if I have 1 or 2 splash ameraucana.....I am pretty bummed about thinking of getting rid of my only 2 polish chicks (one w/c khaki and one blue barred frizzled) as I waited for a khaki bird so long

I need to talk to dh and see what he thinks........ he feels horrible cuz he isn't here to fix it

Dont give up too soon Krista. When we hurt like this we make knee jerk reactions. You're good to your birds and all of us on the boards. Give yourself a little time to heal before you make any severe decisions.

krista, try not to get discouraged. I had multiple attacks over the yrs, some taking me down to 1 bird left. you just need to out smart the predators and if you have to keep the hens locked up for a bit, you just do it. I got to the point that I would only let mine out (after an attack) when I would be out with them and just a few hours before they would normally coop up. they didn't like it but they got used to it and eventually I was able to let them out again. certain times of the yr, i know I have to keep them penned as I like near a bird rehab center and spring and fall they are releasing birds of prey. I had guineas and they would alert the hens to danger. they are not as loud as people say and they will protect your flock from some predators by making noise and then all the hens run for the coop.

Please believe me - nothing to admire! You just try to do your best for them and feel sorry for them. My poor biddies are panting all the time, even in their hen house at night. I think they sleep panting. We were acutally discussing getting a really small window a/c unit for the coop! Right now I'm looking at miniature exhaust fan units.

Once Henrietta's chicks dried off, I don't think they have been under her since. Good brooder weather outside! Last I looked they were all piled on top of her!

I told my hubby I wanted heritage breeds for a laying flock (all 12). So he doesn't really know that much about chickens and as long as they are pretty, don't cause trouble and give us enough eggs to share, he is fine with it.

My hubby actually offered me his free standing ac. But for the most part, I have an industrial fan pointing at the nests, I put ice in all the waterers, and I run the hose on the ground , and believe it or not, they DO stand in the water and cool off. When no one is standing in the water anymore, I shut it off. My one black Ameraucana fell asleep with her beard hanging in the waterer.
We are having exceptionally hot weather this year. Highs are 95-96, where the norm is 90-91. Does it make a difference? YES.
I've had to dunk chickens 3 different times cause they were panting too fast to drink, or not panting at all. Poor things.
