There is quite a bit of awareness and heightened sensitivity in the veterinary community right now. The USDA is revising the whole accreditation process and approx. 60,000 vets have to reaccredited themselves to do health inspections. With the avian infuenza scare and other emerging diseases, new protocols are being put in place. I wouldn't panic yet. The lab probably asks these for all submitted animals considered livestock. It kinda sound like they are dotting their I's and crossing their T's. Nobody wants to be the vet who let some exotic disease slip through. Think biosecurity. dak

The room I keep the incubators in is kind of dim, and I just went in there to roll the brinsea octagon 20 and all this surprised peeping started! I turned on the light and have 4 fat, fluffy Nat OEs, and 2 more are zipping!

I must have mis-counted, er something. I had them hatching Friday!

My black from Nat has the most AMAZING coloring. He's surviving the chopping block next week as I want to breed him to my Ameraucana/BR cross Jett that has the jet black feathers. That's right, the chopping block. I have picked the roosters that are staying and a friend that is processing 40 of hers next week is going to do my 4. We talked about processing. She says when I am ready she will teach me, but understands that I am not "there yet". She has an organic meat farm, I know she'll do a nice job on them.

Can someone advice me....? Never entered eggs into any "competition" before. DD wants to enter eggs in the fair open division and 4H. When they have size divisions do i have to weight them? How do I know small, med. large and so on. it can not just be because of the look of the size.

Also we have ameracauna pullets that are just 2 weeks into laying. Can I enter their eggs as "small"? There is no pullet category.

You would probably have to get an egg scale, or you can look up the USDA standards for egg size/weight and go by that I would think. Then from there you want a "good egg shape" like I have one that lays "torpedo eggs" she'd probably be out. I'd go with nice smooth eggs, colorful, accurate size and not stained. You can buy egg wash through places like jeffers.

Lovin, it could be botulism, eastern equine encephalitis, or that latent Marek's. If it's eee, it's important for the lab to know what areas it's showing up in. In the last few weeks, it killed 2 people in Tampa, and quite a few horses.

If it's latent Marek's, and mine may have had it as well, then it's something that has very minor research because older birds are supposed to be immune. I would think it's real important to get that research going.

I will never forget my Mushmouse silkie, he just got weak, then he couldn't go up the ramp. I put him in a crate on the patio. The paralysis started in his legs, and worked it's way up, wings, neck, he couldn't aim and pick up food, and one eye got real funky and went blind, just like in Marek's. The vet did a necropsy, and didn't see any tumors or lesions, so his guess was eee. However, I really think it was latent Marek's. And no one else got it in that tight group of silkies. Although eee is similar, my silkie has the uber classic symptoms of Marek's and he was 3 years old. And what broke my heart was he was happy and chipper, just couldn't move or eat, and he even crowed in the morning!

There was no ocular with this bird, he ate up til the end but lost weight. Lost one leg's use, the other one just got weak. Wings werent paralyzed either. I have kicked botulism before, I dont think it was Botulism. I truly think latent mareks or triple E. I think latent mareks. Correct me if I'm wrong but that means NONE of my current birds, even old ones can be sold right? This bird was one of the Sterling Sue birds. We had insane mosquito issues. It's a wait and see, but I am so crushed by all this.

4 blue and 3 black cute fluffy chicks OE Nat chicks! I don't think the other 2 eggs will do anything, but am leaving them in there, just in case. I'll try to candle them tonight if they haven't pipped. I'll try to get some pic up today.
