Well, thanks, but they really are great guys and I love them both.

That being said, I'm not sure I want to be around them when they are drinking again! I bought J a bottle of JD the other night and he says the smell and taste is STILL making him sick and it has been almost 2 weeks since we were there!!!!! Those boys are bad when they get together!

She figured that out as she sleepily answered her phone.

Lovins how yah doing this am???

I dont know what goes through my head on days like today-One of the coldest yet and I HAD to hook up all the heated waterers-every waterer was frozen this am so I had to climb behind all brooders to grab them -Poor planning on my part
hmm.png
roll.png
so then had to get cement blocks to put them on-find outlets spaced out so as not to overdo one of them...I chipped ice out of a small baby pool and cleaned it completely-completely emptied out large side of freerangers garage/barn-all shavings and hay right to the floors-they are air drying right now
sickbyc.gif
stinking big ducks are so messy and gross-love them
love.gif
. When done drying a huge layer of DE and 3 bags of shavings to start off fresh for winter-Now mind you I did NOT plan to do this this am. I had jamie bottoms and crocks on! shoveling all crap out with hay shovel-wheelbarreling it to compost pile back and forth back and forth. done. Put clean pool back in-put metal water heater in pool with waterer ontop of that--now the birds will have to go into the empty clean pool to get a drink and the ducks can leave their spillage in there instead of trashing all the clean shavings
barnie.gif
I'll have to experiment with it all to make sure all is safe and that all can reach the waterers-but wow ALL waterers were frozen this am-hands frozen from chipping them out-I dug out a few extras so that when Mark goes down in AM's all he has to do is fill empty ones and swap out-Ill chip the frozen ones when I get home from work everyday!

Olive eggers are laying up a storm-love them--SL brahmas are looking darker than pink today-filled their pen with alot more shaving too just in case one decides to make a nest:) BLRW are laying up a storm too:) the split hens well they dont move... love them!!!

Yah I think Eagle is going to end up being an excellent broody/mom at some point. Not only does she have the britches that are even fluffier than my Orp, but she also herds the babies (swiffer, edju, and lil yellow) around with her and watches out for them. Can't wait to have a whole flock of them!

Have a dumb question but since I don't live in NY and here in W Washington we usually only have a freeze overnight and the hoses defrost during the day so I have running water wondering how you manage having running water for cleaning and why are your waterers only just now freezing (you mentioned 4 degrees while catching ducks)? Do you have everyone in heated garages? and how do you have running water? This is out of ignorance since I've never lived and had animals in places as cold as NY. Occasionally we have a cold blast come through and recently got down to 18 at night 26 during the day so everything was froze for about 3-4 days. When that happens I fill buckets of hot water in the bathtub and carry them down to the animals as all the hose bibs and waterers are froze. And you mentioned cleaning in your crocs? in 4 degrees? you gotta have some thick blood!

Well Nat and I bucket carry. Neither of us have water in our coops. If the weather is good I can use the hose, but lately we're 13 or so at night. I am in the middle of setting up a 55 gallon barrel with a wrap made out of insulation and a foam top with a tank deicer in it so I only have to roll the hose out to refill the tank then drain it and put it back in the heated greenhouse. So I can go about a week without having to refill it. The ducks pools (unlike Nat) will wait until next season. As long as they have their deep dish to clean their nostrils. I have 3 ducks so it's not too bad.

Ok let me do a break down for you

It has been freezing over night for weeks-just not the waterers INSIDE garage:)mostly- I have a 50+ x 30 garage on part of my property-that used to be DH's workshop garage. I slowly converted it into a chicken house:) hehe Shut up guys he has another monsterous workshop near the road..lol The barn/garage has lots of outlets-locking doors-partially insulated not much-DH converted half into beautiful breeding pens for me for my specialty favorite birds ( SLbrahmas-split lav silkies-BLRW-and my OE's) there pens are anywhere from 5 x 8 to 10 x 8-roosting bars nesting boxes special treat bowls and now heated waterers as of this am:) The hose is 400ft long ( its that far to the pump house) so when it freezes its solid and not even warm 40-50 degree weather can totally melt it enough to work unless it stays that temp for more than a day:-(

Do you have everyone in heated garages?

I am hoping not to heat at all this winter as we have it set up much warmer for them-hay bails used for insulation stacked against walls and such-I do have a few heating lights hooked up for my brooders:) that puts out heat too-

and how do you have running water?
We have 5 -5 gallon jugs we fill and leave inside by our door at all times-Dh takes care of everyone in am with fresh water and food-I get home at 5ish and I chip away any frozen waterers he had to swap out in am to have them ready for him for the next day:)

Thick blood I have -tough skin too
wink.png
I had on wool socks and lined crocks- pajami bottoms and top in a sweatshirt and down barn coat-flimpsy gloves but I cant wear bulky gloves to clean:-( I just suck it up and do it no matter how cold it is out-Ive been out cleaning those coops in 20 below weather for hours last Winter-when you really get into to cleaning I heat up and actually have to take a coat off! My compost pile is 100 feet away from coop-so not far to walk back and forth. I get picked on because I get accused of taking better care of my birds than my own family! hahaha I am pretty picky when it comes to cleaning them as I have alot of friends that always want to come over and watch them or look at them ( they dont have chickens and thinkIm off my rocker so they want to see what I spend ALL my time doing)

Lovins you just reminded me of a question I had on your de-icer..I looked into them for a 55 gallon drum like what you are doing but they use 1500watts! Now I had a 1500 watt heater in Morgans room ast year and that sucker cost over 250$ a month to run! Mark said getting that de-icer was out of the question as he would rather carry warm water all winter than pay those electric bills again and I totally agree-Like I said I just paid off LAST years electric bills last month-is your electric dirt cheap or did you find something with smaller wattage??
