Is it possible for the pine shavings I just bought to be to strong smelling for my chicks? They smell very strong to me. Almost irritating to my throat.

They're not dust at all. They just smell WAY stronger than what I've ever used before. Was worried it might cause some breathing issues. Thanks for your reply :)
It depends on how dense the wood was that the shavings came from. I get headaches from strong scents, but mine have not been too strong yet.

If it's strong enough for you to smell it AND for it to be strong enough irritate your throat at five+ feet up, you can be pretty sure a chicken can smell it at only 12 inches.

Do they show any adverse behavior or reluctance to enter the coop? Chickens usually won't go where they don't like unless they have to.

I use the leftovers from the pines I cut down on my property. Fresh pine shavings I leave in the sun to dry out for two or three weeks, then return home with bags full, I even grind up the bark and mix it in. I never hear any complaints from the girls who make me breakfast!!
What does bok bok brrroooook mean?

I bought it for my chicks in the brooder. I haven't put any in with them yet. I have some spread out on a box in the garage trying to calm that smell a bit.

It won't hurt the chicks, but if it bothers you, I agree with letting it air out outside. Unless you are having wet weather. High humidity and contact with wetness makes the smell stronger. You could also consider buying another type of bedding for your brooder.

I aired it out and it's a lot better. I only use shavings in my brooder and it's HUGE bail of it. I hated to not use it and just throw money away.
