Since 2004 in the California Delta, I’ve observed the fish and wildlife population and diversity crash. I haven’t seen a black crowned night heron since 2012 or a thread fin shad since 2005. I quit fishing to allow the seals something to eat, and started raising chickens for food instead. Various reasons, including reduced flushing of the estuary because water diversion to populated areas, illegal pesticide application and runoff, habitat degradation, deliberate herbicide application directly to the river by local government against the wishes of waterfront owners who do their own mechanical control of river weeds. Local cities get their drinking water from the Delta.

Wait, I’m not here to get political. I was just going to make a punchline. Our crappie are crappy.
