Heh...if I named my birds not only would I have to give up my job to think up names, but give up another to remember them.

I took a quick count today.
Turkey breeding pens: 5
Turkey poult pen: 50
Broiler and EE chicks: 30
Bigger broilers: 20
Layers: 175
Roos: 2 (50% fertility covering 100 2 1/2 year old red sex links)
chicks and poults in the indoor brooder: 5
eggs in the hatcher: 22
eggs in the bator: 66
eggs waiting to go into the bator: 31

Poultry math sure works here! 287 on the ground, 119 potential.

It's funny because the 8 I have had names within the first few days. This last hatch I hatched only a couple have been for sure named...lol Just nothing has stuck out with them, plus I've been trying to figure out whick ones I am keeping. I did name the 2 Japanese Bantams "Chibi" and "Sukoshi". lol

My sister has over 100, I think most of hers are named too...lol

Mine never get names unless it just comes about. I have one name Gumbo (guess why, mean rooster, I have plans for him), little bit and mama chicken. I my only easter egger was called easter egger. How sad huh? That's it for me. lol

My silkie's name is Silk...lol My nn roo is on his way out if I can get a good replacement for him out of this hatch. He's gotten a bit aggressive and I will not have an overly aggressive roo. It's great where predators are concerned, he's as protective as heck, but when you come at me there's going to be problems. When you have a 7 year old there's no getting around giving names...lol At least not with mine. Plus it's fun naming them.

I can't say I never name them, but they have to interact with me to make me give them a name.

The broad breasted bronze hen who lays 130g eggs is Big Momma. My light Narragansett tom is Dorian because he acts like he is God's gift to turkeys and thinks the girls should idolize him, and he has a dark side (his secret identity is that of a murderer of blue feed bags). The light Brahma / EE roo is Big Dude, after an earlier Big Dude who was a Light Brahma. The Ameraucana/Salmon Faverolle roo is Fancy Pants, after a RIR roo I had as a kid (that was one evil farm rooster!)

We do always name one turkey Thanksgiving and one Christmas. Big Momma will probably change her name to Christmas this year.

That is a lot of chickens and turkeys. Do you have plans of moving some of them out?

Man I though I had a lot of birds glad I don't have your feed bill. I only have 2 with names Hootie & blowfish I call her fish both were almost killed by the other chickens . I was able to save both. Hootie looked like a barn owl when she was little and the only EE that I have from many failed hatches lasted year. Blowfish well the other Marans chased her into I don't know what and almost cut her head off. how this chicken is alive I don't know. She is laying eggs again. both should have gone to the sale on Sat. but my wife would not let take them. And that's why my chickens don't have names.

I set aside 5-8 turkeys for breeding stock every year, and the rest of the turkeys go to market. We just sold 92 of last year's layer flock, so we've already downsized. As my EE and olive egger hatchlings are identifiable by sex, the males will go away, and the broilers already have dates on the calendar. So by July, we should be down to about 250-275, and after Thanksgiving down to about 200.
