She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

Had to cull one of my big girls today.  Hawk got her.  If I'd gone out when the crows first started their ruckus, I might have been able to save her.  She had too many wounds for it to be practical to stitch her back together.  If she hadn't had the perforated crop, I'd have tried to save her.  She was active and feisty right up to the end.  This is my first predator loss.  (other than a dog many years ago.)

That's terrible. So sorry for your loss. :hugs

So...

Husband and daughter are home, I am on the road.  I left a message on the kitchen table with instructions for care of a turkey that needed minor surgery, and to LEAVE THE INCUBATOR ALONE.

However, they heard some peeping and did what anyone would do, opened the door during lockdown, pulled out the tray, and handled the eggs.  One is pipped, so a "helper" opened a quarter sized hole around the pip to make it easier.

Sigh.

I think I need to lock the incubator in the gun safe and leave the guns out.  They don't mess with those.

Oh man! I would be livid! Everyone in my house is scared of looking at the incubators the wrong way! :)
I hope everyone hatches out ok!

New egg babies just arrived in Nashville. I am like an expectant mother. Thank you @RavynFallen. Just wrote a note for my post people. The ladys name is Glenda and the man is Glen. Lol.

Good luck! So happy you are getting eggs!!

Ok so I am thinking about getting an incubator tomorrow. We are up to 26 eggs now and i dont want them to "go bad". Any advice for a first timer... other than cross my fingers & hope for the best lol. I will go back to the beginning of the thread and re-reading :)

What kind of incubator are you planning on buying?

My advice is get 2 or 3 good thermometers and hygrometers and calibrate them first... if you need help with calibration just post asking, can help with that... and also, what kind of duck eggs are they? Depending on type will depend on best tips needed... oh, and welcome to the addiction!!! :yiipchick

Well Im a first timer here…Set my 24 eggs in a Janoel 24 on Friday night, 7/31( it was actually 1:30am on Aug 1)…Temperature has been rather easy to regulate and keep steady after the first day, however the humidity fluctuates a lot - lowest at 22% and highest at about 55%.  The exact amount of water I am putting is half the squirt bottle in one of the channels of the bottom tray.

Any suggestions as to how to better achieve a more consistent humidity?

Have 12 Buff Orpingtons eggs and 12 high noon leiper eggs in there…Hoping for the best…...

Humidity is based on surface area of the water, not the amount of water, so no matter how much you put in one channel, it should stay the same until it evaporates. Other things you could try are sponges, or more/less channels filled. Early on is the best time to find that sweet spot to maintain the humidity you want. Later needs to be more consistent.

Thank you WV. will keep trying other methods, maybe putting the same amount of water but half in one channel and other half in the other.

Find whatever gets the humidity at the right level (one channel, two, sponge, cup, whatever it takes) then fill them up so you don't have to do it every day.
Look at it this way... 8 ounces of water in a tall champagne glass will produce alot less humidity than will the same 8 ounces of water in a flat pan. But it will evaporate faster in the pan because it is spread out more.

Dry isn't purple. All that lovey/dovey checking eggs and such is.

I don't think I have shown you this, yet:

You smacked me! You're a Bad Boy!

Now I don't know what "BLUE" IS! I thought blue was to follow Brinsea recommendations, no deviations, set them + forget them. I am an analyst - I wish I continued with the extra - weighing at day 7(FOR THE FIRST TIME). But that is ok. What worked in Montgomery NY( 40 min. from the "City" or NY City"(forgive me I was born in Brooklyn) may have to be tweaked for the mountain in Scandia PA. They don't even know what a heat wave is here. Relative humidity I think I got it. Well, I think I understand it, now to adjust to make it work here. I'm done tonight. I will weigh them tomorrow.

Don't you fret. Who else can I speak chicken too? Everyone here probably thinks I am a lunatic. They are just too polite to say. Trouble is I never do anything by halves. I will probably post a blow by blow account. My nickname is chicken or chicken monkey. Has anyone ever seen a chicken monkey.
If anyone is wondering, this is it.

But I don’t want to go among mad people," Alice remarked.
"Oh, you can’t help that," said the Cat: "we’re all mad here. I’m mad. You’re mad."
"How do you know I’m mad?" said Alice.
"You must be," said the Cat, "or you wouldn’t have come here.
