I'm sorry to hear that. We have a lot of redtail hawk in our area and i'm not sure how much they like chicken. So far so good.Had to cull one of my big girls today. Hawk got her. If I'd gone out when the crows first started their ruckus, I might have been able to save her. She had too many wounds for it to be practical to stitch her back together. If she hadn't had the perforated crop, I'd have tried to save her. She was active and feisty right up to the end. This is my first predator loss. (other than a dog many years ago.)
I know my boys are going to do that one of these nights. Most folks in my neighborhood leave the little chicken door open all night though and I have not heard of any of them having predator issues. Besides dogs if they chicken get out of the run.I just about pulled a real doozie! I went out to say goodnight to my crew and realized I hadn't shut the big girls' run yet!! Last time I went out, the LOs were in their run, so I closed the gate, but some of the older ones were still out, and it wasn't dark yet, so I left them. Then I got busy, and just went out for bed checks. Gemma, my turkey, was on top of the run, but everyone else was in the coops...safe and sound. Whew! Scary moment!!

Well Im a first timer here…Set my 24 eggs in a Janoel 24 on Friday night, 7/31( it was actually 1:30am on Aug 1)…Temperature has been rather easy to regulate and keep steady after the first day, however the humidity fluctuates a lot - lowest at 22% and highest at about 55%. The exact amount of water I am putting is half the squirt bottle in one of the channels of the bottom tray.
Any suggestions as to how to better achieve a more consistent humidity?
Have 12 Buff Orpingtons eggs and 12 high noon leiper eggs in there…Hoping for the best…...

Good to know. We had a neighbor a block away with them and I could not believe how loud they are. Beautiful birds though.I'm sort of regretting this whole peachick experience. I didn't realize what "imprint" really entails. These chicks are getting BIG. I've been putting them in a cage outside of the chicken run for a week. Trying to let them interact with other birds. Well yesterday I put them in the actual run. They stayed at my feet, starring up at me, crying. I told them go make friends & threw a bunch of worms on the ground. No luck. Then they were all riled up when I brought them inside for bed. Pacing the cage in a panic. I opened the door to the cage and sat on the couch to see what they wanted. All 3 of them flew out of the cage. One landed on each shoulder and the last one flew right on top of my head! I felt like Ace Ventura! They definitely have identity issues. And they make me feel a nut case! Feeling guilty about getting rid of them but don't know how much longer I can deal with this insanity.

We still have 7-11s out here. Not as many as there once was. We just got our first TSC in the last few years. We have CAL Ranch and IFA (intermountain farmers association). They are all about the same out here. What is that?
Too true!! Glad I don't miss those... I do miss 7-11's though...
