She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

My silkie ad clearly says "straight run means they are too young to tell the boys from the girls". Most people that call say "How many girls do you have?" :he
I also had to start telling people that if they buy straight run, I can't take roosters back, even for free. If someone wants to buy straight run, I tell them to do what I did, buy twice as many chicks as you want hens, hope for the best, and have a backup plan for the roosters.

Shipped eggs are 75%, I don't care if they are quadruple shipped :smack

X2 on the straight runs... that is a pita...

Hey, even internationally shipped??? Aw, c'mon!! :D ;)

It was a Whizbang plucker that someone else made and it works great. Look up whizbang plucker on youtube if you have not seen one.

They do the boiling and they do help a bit. They are coming around.

That's what I'm going to make, I've got the motors and some pulleys scrounged from some old farm equipment. I'm going to go to a local army surplus/have everything you could imagine if you can find it kind of store and make the frame out of angle iron. Just need to buy the fingers and make sure I can get it all put together.

I haven't even had my own parade yet, and I invented the dadgum things! Do you know how bad it hurts to throw a parade for her then not even get one of my own? You'll get no sympathy from me

Well, about that. They are doing the feeding and watering. Most of the processing will be up to me and my boys 12 and 9. We ain't afraid of it, but these folks got some city splashed up on em.

I don't think there's such a thing as a "bad guy" when educating about the difference between Ams and EE.  If someone chooses to remain ignorant instead of accepting free education... that's their problem.  You did it very nicely.  I just wish hatcheries/feed stores would be accountable instead of continued false representation.  And I appreciate your ed. re: Ams and acceptable green vs not acceptable purple sheen.  I think any sheen is beautiful, and assumed that green vs. purple was just a matter of how the light hits the feathers at any given time.  Thanks for the education!!!

I agree on the educating not being a bad thing, but there are some people who seem to enjoy just posting up stating that those are EE's but aren't willing to take the time to say why... I agree with your comment quite a bit back that it does get tiring to 'hand hold' all the time, but I feel strongly that if someone is going to tell someone else that they don't have what they thought they did, then they should also be willing to explain why as well... responding to posts is a responsibility in itself, it shouldn't be about who is right or wrong, or eho is right first...

Oops, sorry... rant over...

Ravyn may can explain it better than I can, but I asked about the sheens on the Am thread. Beetle green is the acceptable color, and 3 of my boys were showing purple. Someone told me that the way the feather reflects light is in how the feather is structured, and that's why purple was unacceptable. They also said it could possibly molt out as their adult feathers grew in, and for the most part it has, but the biggest boy is about 50/50 purple/green still. It may molt completely to green, but the one I am planning on keeping right now is a beautiful, full green

I've heard of different reasons for purple or green sheens, last one was about whether the black was gold based or silver based... but my understanding is that any birds (especially solid blacks) should mature out with the beetle green sheen for optimal breeding... yes, sometimes juvies can show it and molt it out, but if you have the option of a full green sheen from the start, go with that first... also, your best bet for breeding is to keep them until fully matured if possible before selecting your keepers... things that look like flaws may not be and ones that look good early, may show major flaws later...

This is my big problem with the BCM/KFC thread. I had plenty of people tell me not to breed Tate, but it took me forever to get someone to say why. I asked for honest opinions, and I could handle being told to eat him, but tell me why

Thats what we thought here in PA @lazy gardener but out of all our breeds they had faired the best! we never had a stitch of frostbite on them but we did take care to prevent with 2x4 sideways, ventilation as we know up north is key. Out of all the birds breeds we had, we never once lost a white face to ANYTHING! Truely strong breed, we had standards not bantams though

Hi @sideWing

ach du gut!! how pretty they are!

I feel your pain, I picked up a virus the kids carried in... ughhhhh goes with the start of school.... wish I could homeschool
True story: The first four years of my son's life he was rarely sick with more than a cold/allergy type crap. I put him in "preschool" (headstart) at 4 1/2 and every time you turned around the kid was sick. Same thing in kindergarten. At one point I had taken him to the dr's-second time he had strep I think- she walked in looked at my son and said "Your mommy is going to pull you out of school isn't she?" She knew I didn't like public school and had contemplated homeschooling. I pulled him out of school to homeschool for the last quarter of kindergarten, we just started 2nd grade. Hasn't been sick. I picked up the flu and was dying January 1st and gave it to the rest of the house. Other than that, back to my reasonably sick free kid. Amazing!

jeez, these parades are tough.
Shut up, Amy
Moi??? Just get an LG 9200 and coddle them and they'll pop out nice and healthy.

Out of curiosity can everyone tell me the cost of Groc Market eggs in your area, and what backyard eggs are costing?
Curious our market here in PA went up to well over $4.50 now, everyone wants my eggs for eating but we are eating and hatching most so I cant share LOL
I tell everyone GET YOUR OWN BACKYARD CHICKENS! DOH

This is a first year we are actually raising our own meaties CornishX not sure I am sold on it yet LOL
They eat and poo and eat and poo = stink I had to lime and add shavings today now its under control!
So much rain of late doesnt help! They are growing so fast!

Last I looked here they were between $3.59-$3.89 for regular store eggs. I don't ever look at the organics. I only usually have a couple extra dozen at any given time and one of my friends are buying those and I sell them to her for $2 a dozen if she brings me the cartons. Next year when they are all laying I plan on "advertising" and will be charging more and using fresh store bought cartons with cute little stickers on them.
