She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

Well, I hadn't posted any pics of them for a while. They should be laying any time now, I hope. The boys are still fraidy cats though.
Oh I am really happy to see them, they are such gorgeous birds....lol Just make me want want want.....

Ha, we ... think..alike. It just may be bird..now I have to go look.

You win!!!
Apparently I have my first broody. My Jap Banty has been laying on the nest all day. She fans her tail and "growls" if you reach out to her. I did finally pick her up to see how many eggs are under her and she has 7 she is sitting on. I quickly marked them and replaced her. We'll see if she decides to stay on the nest or go to roost tonight. If she is truely broody and stays on them, I will let her keep the 7 she has, but I don't expect much. For now I am going to leave her in with the others as long as the others don't give her a problem. If they do I have a huge dog crate I will move her to for the duration, but I would prefer them hatched in the coop with the others, cause I had no plans to incubate any more this year.
I'd recommend moving her sooner than later. If she's 8^tc4y enough, the others may leave her alone, but they will sneak into her nest when she takes a break and add eggs or mess with her eggs. Some folks have broody eggs broken when other hens mess with the nest.

My eggs got the heat turned off for about an hour. Heat dropped down to 86. Hasn't been a week yet. I'm going to candle them on Fri or Sat. Who thinks they are still fine?
They'll be just fine.

Not sure if I can handle knowing eggs are incubating and I can't mess at will.
hmm.png
Now your silkies brood and hatch right in the coop with no separation right?

I bet they are fine.
It's a pretty boring experience until they hatch. Then... what fun!!!

My humidity made it up to 67% and I think that's where it's staying, what should I do now? I was told if I plan to mess with them the humidity should be at about 72%, would 67% be close enough or should I try to add another sponge?
When the eggs start hatching that humidity will rise all by it'self. Megan, follow these instructions very carefully. Sit down in a chair. Bend both elbows to 90 degrees so that your hands are in front of you. Be sure your palms are facing down. Now, the next steps are very important! Lean far to the left. Bring your right hand, keeping the palm down, out to the side. Then slide your palm onto the seat you are sitting on. Tuck it under your right cheek. Now, lean very far to the right. Now, bring your left hand, keeping the palm down, out to the side. Then slide your palm onto the seat you are sitting on. Tuck it under your left cheek. Now, you can sit up straight. When ever you feel the urge to mess with the eggs, unless you have an Amy worthy reason to be doing so, repeat all of these steps.

So, here is my baby, I am thinking girl now. Anyone? Turned 2 months on the 12th.
She is so pretty!! I definitely agree that she's a girl! :)
It kills mice like crazy. I just don't want to triple S it if it's doing a good job. :thumbsup It used to be domesticated. Sadly the people that we bought the house from left it IN the house. We have kids that are wicked allergic so we couldn't keep it in the house. Now we see it from time to time hunting in the fields. Yes, we tried to tell the previous owners, but they would not listen to us or the Realtor. Sometimes people make me sad.
That's exactly what happened to me! Move in day and there's a cat in the place. Previous owner says he left it on purpose because he didn't want it anymore! Are you serious?!! So now I have an outdoor cat. He's not mine so I'm not paying to bring him to the vet or let him in the house. But I do leave dry food outside because I feel bad during the winter. He hasn't left the yard for exactly 1 year. And he kills lots of critters. I would definitely worry about chicks but he's good with the chickens because he hangs outside the run all day.

Omg! Your first broody! Should I say congratulations?? I'm interested to see how you manage to let her do all the work and have to stay hands off. Hopefully she'll take a couple short breaks so you can candle!! :)
@Cynthia12 here are a few of mine. The black split is turning out to have the best feathering. They are almost 21 weeks.

is that what its called? I figured it was 2 kids, after school activities, pets, the difficult job of a SHAM, new to chickens, 4H projects, 4H community service,15 projects/repairs going on simultaneously, trying to prepare for winter and trying to keep up on this thread. I still have another 200+ quotes to read.
Whoa! I thought women were supposed to be great multi-taskers!

You're eating it, not me!!!
gig.gif

I'd just leave it... got a clean spray bottle handy? Keep warm water in it and if you have to go in, give a spritz around before closing back up...
Who said anything about eating?

People throwing stuff at me, I go to war.

Gachooks!! We were talking about you today. We miss you.

Are you intresested in participating in the ship a thon this spring-ish?

It's high enough for hatching as long as you can keep it there and if you do open make sure you bring it right back up.
Awwww, shucks.
highfive.gif
Miss you too.
Yeah, I'd love to participate. We have Black Australorps from a good breeder and Rhodebars from GFF lines. We have the BLRW too, but they won't be ready for a few months. And, of course, we have our Birchen CB. I'm down for whatever and would love to learn how to ship hatching eggs from the best of em(aka Ravyn).

I don't want to move her unless I absolutely have to. I had no plans of more chicks this year so if she has them out there amongst the others and takes care of them and the whole 9 yards, it's better for both of us...lol I did mark the 7 in there so I will be checking to make sure more is not added daily. I'm thinking about making a different set of nesting boxes and adding them in attempts to coax the others into laying in a different spot. They aren't interested in the nesting box that's out there now, so it's probably futile. But if there are any signs of problems I will put the crate together out there and put her in it.

I'm out of ovations, but that was hilarious.

Well- I really never wanted to deal with a broody and I probably will be pulling my hair out before it's over-but I have to admit a slight excitement to see how it goes. If it doesn't go well, it's not going to be heartbreaking as I wasn't expecting it, though I would hate to have started chicks and disaster strike. So I guess I'm a bit excited but not anticipating much. Not one single of my girls that are almost a year old have gone broody nor the three silkies I took from my sister which I believe are 2-3 years old. My Black Jap Banty is 5 months and she's the one feeling the broody urge....lol. If she hatches it'll be funny to see her with the babies as most are standard. I know one is a spitz egg, so that would be cool if it hatches and is a girl. If she's still on them tomorrow and my spitz lays another egg, I may let her have that one too....lol.

That's exciting! Wonder if she will get 100% too? :)
Post a pic of her when you get a chance please. I was so happy that mine hatched, then lost 4 of the 5 to my burned out bulb :(
Are you using the cooling feature? Mine has it too, but I didn't use it. I have read that its more beneficial to ducks, but haven't read the article relating to chickens. I'll look that up.
