She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

What is outcrossing? Sorry if that's a dumb question, lol. Is it breeding in other bloodlines or is it breeding to a different breed altogether?

Outcrossing is crossing out to different varieties.

Unlike horses or dogs or even chickens, domestic turkeys are not "breeds". They are, for the most part, color varieties and by selecting the correct colors you can recreate most of the other color patterns. You can spend a lifetime learning genetics...

But, simply, if I had a Narragansett hen and crossed her to a Bronze tom, I would not have any Narragansett babies. If I had a Narragansett tom and crossed him to a Bronze hen, I would have some Narragansett females. By crossing the Narragansett females back to the Narragansett tom father, I would have both male and female Narragansetts. That is where line breeding is VERY helpful. But if the original tom was a poor specimen, those flaws would be magnified in his grandchildren and in future generations. Likewise if he was small, his offspring would tend to be smaller. Or if he was superb, his grandchildren could be even better.

I wish I had a basement, lol. I have a nice cool closet that no body ever goes in.
ETA: Should I turn it atleast twice a day?

If you remember. Don't lose sleep over it.

Outcrossing is breeding in a different variety of same breed, or different breeds if chickens... Walnut was talking about different varieties of turkeys... yiu can lose original genes outcrossing... but it's more popular to outcross chickens since most chicken breeds today are based on more than one breed originally, so it can strengthen those lines rather than diluting them, if done properly...

Thanks!!! I a might have to do this to add more girls to my flock of SLP!!!
Okay that makes it easy
Lol! !

Linebreeding is essential to find faults in your own line and to strengthen good qualities... breeding a different line in can introduce new faults as well as good qualities, so it depends on what your intentions are in breeding...
If breeding strictly for SOP, linebreeding is a bit more helpful, then add in new blood once most faults are bred out... if breeding to just sell off backyard pairs that others can breed together themselves, using 2 separate lines is better... personal choices is all... :)

I was going to multi-quote but got distracted by chickens...who'd have thought. So..
Amy~ can you send me the link to your blog? I'm sure it's in your siggy but I can't see those on the mobile.
Ravyn~I hope you feel better! I'm getting sick too! Woke up with a sore throat, sinus pressure, tight chest. No fun, I'm have that sick "fog".

I finally decided that I'm going to stop trying to sex these silkies and just wait till spring. I know for sure I have 2 boys and 2 girls, the rest just perplex me!! I figure it will be better to keep them for winter (more bodies=more warmth) and better to sell in spring. So I'm officially giving up!!

Not all malpositioned chicks is genetics. Mine piped at pointy end and I waited.....then he started zipping the length if the shell..so I tapped into the air cell to watch the vessels until all blood and yolk was absorbed then I helped him out. And he is just fine. No deformities.
Awesomesauce!
X2

What is your opinion on doing this?? I am just curious. I might do this if it's okay. Lol!!
Looks like you guys are having fun!!
Yummmmm!!!! No diet during the holidays in my opinion.
