I got pulled away selling chickens and banding turkeys and controlling squirrel invasions, but...

Smoked turkey...pure delight.
Dressing with apples, cranberries and walnuts...yummy!
Home canned green beans...not as good as fresh, but much quicker.
Sweet potatoes didn't happen, but loaded baked potatoes made it.

You too??? I hope you feel better. The link I use is to the humidity post: http://letsraisechickens.weebly.com...anuals-understanding-and-controlling-humidity The blog in it's entirety needs some work and I still have some things I want to cover, just need to make the time to do it.

Aww. Look at those dark fuzzies! Congrats!

@AmyLynn here is some info to help you answer that question on your blog about vent plugs.... I was confused over these when I first started incubating and had to research them because so many people said different things.... yea really imagine that! ha ha ha

VENTILATION (OXYGEN)

Ventilation is VERY important during the incubation process.
While the embryo is developing, oxygen enters the egg through the shell and carbon dioxide escapes. Oxygen requirements will increases during development and during hatching. Unobstructed ventilation holes, both above and below the eggs, are essential for proper air exchange. HOWEVER New Studies (Show Dr.Bramwell Discussion) have found that a slight decrease in oxygen the first 10 days (ONLY the first 10) creates a natural higher CO2 level which will naturally build in the incubator and add a little stress to young embryos which will force the embryo to survive and grow stronger, hatch earlier, hatch larger, grow stronger, grow faster and yeild more muscle mass at 6 weeks of age. PUT THE VENT PLUGS IN FOR THE FIRST 10 DAYS ONLY and then REMOVE ALL VENT PLUGS for the rest of the hatch!

NOTE: When Lockdown occurs, vent openings are frequently restricted in an attempt to boost incubator humidity. Instead of helping the chick hatch, the chick is suffocated from lack of oxygen. Never decrease ventilation openings at hatching in an attempt to increase humidity. Increase humidity by other methods. If any vent adjustments are made, they should be opened more. Try adding a dampened sponge or towel to help boost humidity during lockdown.

So, side by side (photos from earlier hatch), how do these chicks look?
A mixed bag. Some are dark, probably by Tate, some have that penguin look that has been growing out nicely. I'm growing all of these pullets out until they start laying and the ones closer to standard go in the BCM pen, the rest get an Am rooster. There are a few cockerels from previous hatches that I have my eye on, but this is the biggest Davis hatch yet

Aww, man!  You too?   I thought maybe it was the chicks in the bathroom, but I've been this way for the past few days whether I'm here or somewhere else.  Maybe it's our general area.
Feel better. :hugs

Those chicks are too cute.  Are the Davis eggs shipped?

Still rooting for you, @meganhundley
When I realized how far off Tate and his gang were, I bought some 18 month old Davis line laying hens this summer. I paid through the nose, but that's where my biggest, darkest eggs are coming from, and I'm hoping to hatch a cockerel closer to SOP.
#14 is out, 15 will be within 30 minutes, 16 is pipped :D

Thanks, everyone for well wishes, and back at ya for ones feeling same... tis the season, right? lol...
Just blew half a day on a potential sale that fell through... hopefully taking these extras to auction next weekend... I am soooo done...

Well, friends, here we go:
I set a clutch of 6 Red Sex-link eggs on 9/1, after scrapping the first clutch after 28 days with no results under my broody & having her quit setting the same day I put 6 fresh eggs under her. I fired up my old Hova-bator that I hadn't used for 20+ yrs; had a h--- of a time getting the finicky temp. control where I wanted it. Ultimately, it continued to fluctuate between 98+ & 100+, but I didn't mess with it further. Candled on day 14; tossed one clear. Candled a couple times after that; never saw any veins at all, even with a 50w bulb ...only decent air cells & dark masses that never showed any movement.

Went to lockdown on day 19 with 5 eggs with temp @ 99+ & rh running about 65%, expecting possibly a delayed hatch (if any hatch at all after the first attempt was a total bust).

Went to bed last night with one pip. Woke this morning with the same pip & nothing happening with the other four. Left for an all-day Crappie fishing trip on the C&O canal, returning about 3 hrs ago to one chick completely hatched & dry, nothing changed with the other four. An hour later I had 3 hatched.

That's where it stands at the moment. I guess even a blind squirrel finds an acorn occasionally!

Are Red sex-link males born white, or does that come with age? All three hatchlings so far are colored...one a bit darker than the other 2, possibly 'cause it's not completely dry yet.

Now I'm headed back to catch up on the 90+ posts I missed while I was gone, while I watch the Packers game.

Awesome. I'm glad it worked out for you.

That's probably what we are going to do with these BLRW. A cockerel from Foley/Paul/Papa to sire our future chicks(and/or hens if we end up with a solid CB).

Was curious myself. Looks like you got some more penguins this time!

I thought the offspring from sex-link hens were no longer sex linked - and it only works in the first generation crosses? Just curious, would like to know if that is true.

Congratulations on your new babies!
