She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

I got pulled away selling chickens and banding turkeys and controlling squirrel invasions, but...

Smoked turkey...pure delight.
Dressing with apples, cranberries and walnuts...yummy!
Home canned green beans...not as good as fresh, but much quicker.
Sweet potatoes didn't happen, but loaded baked potatoes made it.

I think I gained 5 lbs just reading this! Sounds lip-smacking, belt loosening delicious!

Nice chicks, sc... and good hatch already!
fl.gif
for the rest...

Thanks, everyone for well wishes, and back at ya for ones feeling same... tis the season, right? lol...
Just blew half a day on a potential sale that fell through... hopefully taking these extras to auction next weekend... I am soooo done...
both of my kids have to take zyrtech everyday, finally off of the neb treatments! I called the doc last week and of course you cannot speak to a doctor, sooooo

I ask the nurse if she could please see if the doc can CALL in the prescript for generic Zyrtech so I can get it cheaper since I have two kids on it daily in the bad allergy seasons. She calls me back and says I need to bring both kids in for visits before they will call in a prescript! I was furious, like I am going to spend 60 bucks for appointments for kids that are on a preventative and be seen for nothing to save a few bucks! In the end she didnt like my attitude and never responded again, But the pharmacy called to say a prescript is ready LOL

you know what makes me so upset, when we call for doc appointments we can never get in, so we have to go to an "urgent care" so in turn kids didnt have to go to the doc for over a year, even though at the urgent care several times a year, so whos fault is it that my kids werent at their office for health care? ughhhhh and now they are only open 4 days a week!

@AmyLynn here is some info to help you answer that question on your blog about vent plugs.... I was confused over these when I first started incubating and had to research them because so many people said different things.... yea really imagine that! ha ha ha

VENTILATION (OXYGEN)

Ventilation is VERY important during the incubation process.
While the embryo is developing, oxygen enters the egg through the shell and carbon dioxide escapes. Oxygen requirements will increases during development and during hatching. Unobstructed ventilation holes, both above and below the eggs, are essential for proper air exchange. HOWEVER New Studies (Show Dr.Bramwell Discussion) have found that a slight decrease in oxygen the first 10 days (ONLY the first 10) creates a natural higher CO2 level which will naturally build in the incubator and add a little stress to young embryos which will force the embryo to survive and grow stronger, hatch earlier, hatch larger, grow stronger, grow faster and yeild more muscle mass at 6 weeks of age. PUT THE VENT PLUGS IN FOR THE FIRST 10 DAYS ONLY and then REMOVE ALL VENT PLUGS for the rest of the hatch!

NOTE: When Lockdown occurs, vent openings are frequently restricted in an attempt to boost incubator humidity. Instead of helping the chick hatch, the chick is suffocated from lack of oxygen. Never decrease ventilation openings at hatching in an attempt to increase humidity. Increase humidity by other methods. If any vent adjustments are made, they should be opened more. Try adding a dampened sponge or towel to help boost humidity during lockdown.
Yes, thank you, I am actually aware of that concept, however, I am a person who tries to put more emphasis on experiences than on studies and what works for individuals. Supposedly I put enough "stress" on my chicks daily by candling and meddling, so they are good there.
wink.png
I am seriously a "if it's not broke, don't fix it gal". Now if someone is having weak chicks being born or runts or post hatch deaths, then it would definitely be an idea to try and suggest. I suggest things that I have tried because I have either failed or succeeded with them. The hands off bunch (no names named...lol) may have better luck utilizing a method such as this since they don't stress the embryos enough. Now I do like to "test" the practices I consider "myths" just to shove it in the face of nay sayers and those that leave no room for individualism and insist that there is only one way to do it and their way is the only way. But, I generally give people that I help an idea of how others do it along with what I find that works, that way they can find their comfort level and pull out the elements that make sense to them. While I find studies interesting and not w/out merit, I prefer to follow what makes sense to me and what I've experienced.

When I realized how far off Tate and his gang were, I bought some 18 month old Davis line laying hens this summer. I paid through the nose, but that's where my biggest, darkest eggs are coming from, and I'm hoping to hatch a cockerel closer to SOP.
#14 is out, 15 will be within 30 minutes, 16 is pipped

WooHoo!! Almost there!

Well, friends, here we go:
I set a clutch of 6 Red Sex-link eggs on 9/1, after scrapping the first clutch after 28 days with no results under my broody & having her quit setting the same day I put 6 fresh eggs under her. I fired up my old Hova-bator that I hadn't used for 20+ yrs; had a h--- of a time getting the finicky temp. control where I wanted it. Ultimately, it continued to fluctuate between 98+ & 100+, but I didn't mess with it further. Candled on day 14; tossed one clear. Candled a couple times after that; never saw any veins at all, even with a 50w bulb ...only decent air cells & dark masses that never showed any movement.

Went to lockdown on day 19 with 5 eggs with temp @ 99+ & rh running about 65%, expecting possibly a delayed hatch (if any hatch at all after the first attempt was a total bust).

Went to bed last night with one pip. Woke this morning with the same pip & nothing happening with the other four. Left for an all-day Crappie fishing trip on the C&O canal, returning about 3 hrs ago to one chick completely hatched & dry, nothing changed with the other four. An hour later I had 3 hatched.

That's where it stands at the moment.  I guess even a blind squirrel finds an acorn occasionally!

Are Red sex-link males born white, or does that come with age? All three hatchlings so far are colored...one a bit darker than the other 2, possibly 'cause it's not completely dry yet.

Now I'm headed back to catch up on the 90+ posts I missed while I was gone, while I watch the Packers game.

If they're eggs from Sex-links, then no, next generation is not sex-linked... if you used the original types of birds for sex-linking, like RIR over silver based hen, then yes they are sex-linked...
Congrats on the successful hatch!!

Sounds amazing!

Was curious myself.  Looks like you got some more penguins this time!

I thought the offspring from sex-link hens were no longer sex linked - and it only works in the first generation crosses?  Just curious, would like to know if that is true.

Congratulations on your new babies! :jumpy :jumpy :jumpy

Yep, you are correct!

Yep, it sucks... only allergy meds that work for me are on restricted sales, so can only get like half a dozen boxes per year w/out script... and thanks to the healthcare changes, I can't afford medical... so no doc... :(

Sheesh, guys, I'm gone for nearly 3 days, and I'm only behind 700-some posts (granted, nearly 800 by the time I caught up)? Did someone steal your internet?

Took my older daughter with me to the women's retreat with our old church Thursday--thought I'd share a pic

Sweet, what was the topic of the conference? Sounds like it was at a nice place! Glad you had a good time. How old is she???
Meant to tell you, I've seen your posts about the cartons, and I think I understand now why you said it. Since I had a full load this time, a lot of the eggs were almost vertical. Those hatched first. I assume that's why you used the cartons. In the eggs with the small air cells, the chicks are pipping circles at the ends of the eggs and sliding out. I'm going with the cartons next time
thumbsup.gif
My best hatch ever was with eggs that were laid flat and hand rotated until lock down, then they were set in cardboard cartons b/c I thought the cells were too small. I do believe I'll try the cartons again next time.

11 in the brooder, #13 just hatched, #14 pipped. All but 2 are Davis eggs

Sounds like you're gonna get a parade!!!

This depends. Were the eggs from your red sex link hens, or were they from a Roo, hen combination that will produce red sex link chicks? Your red sex link hens will NOT produce red sex link chicks, and you can't depend on down color from a chick produced by a red sex linked hen to tell what gender that chick will be. There are some excellent charts on sex linking on the thread titled: Sex linked information. I use these charts all the time to review my hatching possibilities.

I thought the offspring from sex-link hens were no longer sex linked - and it only works in the first generation crosses? Just curious, would like to know if that is true.
True, check out the charts in the above info.

I'm sure I put more stress on eggs by having them shipped across the country and up 4-5000 feet in elevation. On the high-altitude thread they even talk of using CO2 scrubbers to decrease the CO2 buildup in the incubator.

Without a way to test shell permeability and to test how much CO2 stress is "good" vs "bad" I think I'll pass on that advice, too. Have they done additional studies since 2012?

Kinda like telling the difference between a gorilla and a chimp
Let me see a comparison of the two.....

I swear I used to be smart and so quick! Pregnancy, kids & other previous activities have fried my brain!
You and me both GF!

A long as the previous activities didn't fry the kids , you are ahead of the game

That's so funny that you say that. I thought it was just me. I haven't been to a "primary care" dr in forever. There's a super fast walk-in urgent care right next to me and a pharmacy right next door to that. I've been to the regular Drs where it's so double and triple booked, you have to wait, sitting on the table for hours, literally! No thanks.
Oh, and I'm glad you got there meds! :)

I wonder if this is why all 9 of these little boogers are still alive and kicking in my eggs? I accidentally left the plugs in for like the first week after I set them til I found out that I really needed to remove them asap, lol
