She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

I really appreciate that if something different is working for someone else then it's respected here. I was getting so mad at that FB "hatching 911" group because you HAVE to hatch their way or you're "wrong" and not welcome. For example you had a 100% hatch, and they are going to tell you that you are wrong!?!? Frustrates me. But I could just leave the group. Instead I started putting my two sense in and watching everyone flip out. You're only allowed to candle at lockdown in that group. So a newbie wrote in about wanting to check her eggs on day 7 and I told her "go ahead, I candle everyday with GREAT results"....then I just sat back and watched the uproar start. They are going to kick me out!

I checked mine too, the brinsea mini, and it only has tiny, tiny holes on the bottom and none on the top that I can see...? But I think they know what they are doing, so I'm not sweating it.
X2!!!!

Morning Ruby! I bet those FB people are ready to smack you. I don't think FB has the fun smack emoji that we have though!
smile.png

And you asked about me putting Call ducks on my pond... I'm starting to think I may not do call ducks. I'm still debating. But I did discover that I have bunches and bunches of bass in my pond!! A couple of years ago, we moved 4 fish from the other pond on the property to the pond closest to the house. I was never sure if they survived or not, but apparently they did!! And they reproduced! They were there when my last set of ducks were there too. And I believe that tells me that I don't have any turtles that might harm the ducks, or they would have eaten the fish, I think. But if I do calls, I think I would always keep them at my house, not at the camp pond.

That's funny because I started second guessing if I really want to add ducks in the spring! But I already bought two duck houses! They just seem like a lot of work! And I was talking to this breeder that told me that lady I'm supposed to get the eggs from is great but the facts are that SQ call duck eggs have about 60-70% fertility, then take 50% off of that for shipping damage, and I'd be lucky to get 1 or 2 ducklings per dozen eggs! That's kinda expensive!! Maybe I'll look local if I do them. I know when spring comes I'll get hatch happy! That's awesome about the fish! That pond looks so beautiful and peaceful!! Also I talked to Lacrystol and she said she would help us anyway she could if we do take the "call duck challenge" in spring!
Eta: because I'm rude and forgot to say "good morning" back at ya!

Actually, 9--1/4 of 12 is 3, and 3x3=9

But parades are done for lockdown percentages, so for megan to get a parade, she'd need 75% of 9, which is 6.75. Since realistically, you can't have a fraction of a chick, if 7 hatch, then it's parade time

And you corrected yourself while I was typing

This is the correct answer

I know 6.75 would be rounded up in the real world, but I think for parade purposes it should be rounded down to the full chick...lol

No

I'm all for that, lol. So 6 or 7?

SC has final say in anything parade wise...that's his baby...lol But I would say 6 cause in my mind you would go by the whole number.
wink.png
but I would give parades for 50% so..I'm a sucker...lol
Yes, it's my baby. I love throwing parades, but there is a reason the bar is high. If it were easy, we would be having parades every week, and they wouldn't be special any more. I would love as much as anyone to hatch one parade batch, then sit back and gloat for the rest of the year like some people
roll.png
, but I'm hatching every few weeks, so bad things are going to happen.
I don't think this batch is going to produce a parade either, but I am very happy with the results. I have 15 in the brooder this morning, so this is my best marans hatch yet. All of the large brown eggs with the small air cells hatched, so I learned a lot from this batch. The Davis eggs hatching points more towards the genetics of Tate's original flock as the source of my earlier issues. I won't be incubating those eggs any more. I have several cockerels coming up that hatched from those dark eggs, and 2 of them are developing nicely. I should have several more from this batch, too, so I'm hoping to get at least one rooster that can take Tate's place in the BCM pen. Tate will be given a flock of Ams next spring.
The incubator is still running, but there are no pips in the remaining light eggs. What I thought was a pip on #16 was a piece of shell from another egg. If there are no pips when I get home tonight, I will shut it down and probably won't be hatching any more until the Ams start laying some normal sized eggs, probably in December
So, no 2015 parade for me, but I finished the year with 30 marans chicks, which was my original goal, so I'm happy

Im glad the humidity thing came up last night, as far as the brinsea. Ive worried about that big ole thing and its one itty bitty adjustable vent hole... I told myself i open the bator enough [at once a day (rotating trays)] so i know they arent suffocating...

I wanted to ask, ive seen it discussed But, theres no one here who mists or cools their eggs? My AH is just too flipn high i did weights again, and ive decided im not happy with their % of weight loss. Air cell sizes look only slightly less than desireable, bu thats not very accurate, the math is... These are big ole pekin duck eggs, and were at around day 24!!!!!(lockdown friday!!!!) theyre percentages are around 10-12, and by friday i want to see 16-18%. Been lossing 3-6% each week. im worried theyre gna b sticky, incubated with too much himidity. But then, some people incubate at or above the 42% that i have been stuck at. It was 50s+ when it started, and had to have two weeks to dry out to 42... This thing is its own dehumidifier when compared to our air quality here. i wanna add rice for at least a day or two if im not gna mist and cool them. Im looking for any insight into this, and or i would love someones experience.

You never know what will happen today! Sounds like you had a great hatch and you met your goal!! So here's a :smack, cus I really wanted to do this :hugs but I know it makes your skin crawl!

Here's my experience, and I didn't weigh. When I set peafowl eggs in July, my AH was high and I couldn't get it to go below 50-60% inside the incubator, even running dry. It was a couple days before lockdown and I was not happy with the air cells, they were just a bit too small for my liking. So I bought that moisture control charcoal/carbon mixture at the dollar store (I tried rice and un-popped popcorn and it did nothing). I put a small cup in the incubator and my humidity went down to 20-25%. I ran that way for 4-5 days and lockdown late. The air cells looked perfect by the late lockdown. And all hatched except one egg.

I didn't do the misting, so I can't give any experience there, sorry. But I have to ask... Today is day 24? I thought these were pekin mixes? Why wait till Friday to lockdown? Friday should be hatch day, right? What am I missing, or am I just having a blonde moment....
