She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

Uh oh, I have something that smells off in the bator... I sniffed the cracked egg, and that surprisingly wasn't it! That one smelled fine! How do I identify the bad egg other than sniffing each one?? Help!

ETA: Nevermind I found it :sick  Yes, I sniffed it, it was obvious. It was one of the Marans eggs, yet not the cracked one. I opened it up (in a ziploc baggie) and it was scrambled inside, no development whatsoever.  Blech.

Yep, those are doozies, lol... always sniff each egg... sounds weird, but when you candle just check as you go... sometimes you get lucky and can catch them before they're fully ripe... :sick

Well, We were going to candle Wed, but I could smell it, so I had to find it. I did a quick candle of the other ones. I *think* i see some development in a couple of the marans eggs, but am not sure. Am kind of worried about them now, thinking they were most likely scrambled in shipment. Then about 10 of the d'uccle eggs are either blood rings or still clear as far as I can tell. I didn't realize that the bad egg had made the room smell off. It wasn't very strong yet, but man, I can smell things like the soap/dryer sheets used in the laundry on my clothes now. Wierd.

Sounds like it's still early, so just give them some more time... don't worry over something you aren't sure if yet... Marans are a pain and are harder to tell so need a little longer to be sure...
The smell cleared your sinuses, lol...

Aaawwwww !!!!! How cute!!!!

I've never had a rotten egg and I hope I never get one! Sounds gross and my fear would definitely be it exploding all over the incubator!!

Yes...I am also thankful to not have found a smelly egg yet. When you egg Topsy are the yolks supposed to be intact???? I have notice before that mine have come out scrambled. ...but no smell. Just curious as to what is the norm for it.

LOL not getting a hand slap for candling 2 days early? Or is that because I had an excuse to open up and see what was going on?

You'll not get a hand slap from me. I consider candling to be a privilege of incubation: I often start candling as early as day 2 - 3 to see if I can see subtle differences between an incubated egg and a freshly laid egg. They have a certain glow about them!

Georgia, how are the 2 assists doing now?

As far as yolks disintegrating during incubation: I think it's just a matter of the membranes degrading with age (in an infertile or quitter).
