She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

Ok, serious problem. Something is wrong with my big rooster Big Guy. When hubby arrived at camp, he noticed Big Guy was off by himself, hanging around the house, while the rest of the flock was down by the coop. He said he was kinda droopy but he threw him some scratch and he seemed ok.
When I got here, it was dark and they were already in the coop, but we found Big Guy on top of the run. Dont know why he didn't go in before the door closed.
So we took him inside the building and his comb is bloody looking, and down around his crop I found a bunch of broken feathers and its all red. One leg is scraped up too.

So I assume he got into a fight, but does this sound like a fight with Punkin, the #2 rooster, or a fight with a predator? We locked him in the building for the night, so I'll see how he is in the morning.

Dangit. Now I'll have to figure out what to do with him. He's probably close to 4 years old.
That is what happened with my boys in the first coop. My NN was dominant, Willy was his side kick. Until Willy decided that he wasn't taking seconds anymore. One day he went from 2nd to first. He wouldn't let my NN around the girls, wouldn't let him around the scratch when I threw it out. He would chase him off every time. Got to the point he was chasing him so much, my nn would end up trying to get away and finding himself on the outside of the run. My sister was supposed to take the nn for me months before, but always something came up. (He was people aggressive.) I heard a ruckus in the coop and went to investigate and Willie had David down in the corner beating him just like Gibbs did to Elvis. (Just not as bad injuries.) That weekend I took him to the Amish. Hated the idea of him being supper, but couldn't let him get picked and beat on all the time either. Willy is a perfect gentle man, non aggressive, good protector, so I wasn't moving him out. (Though if my plans work out for next year, he will be going- but to my sister's so he's not supper..)

Sounds to me like he got into something that gave a pretty good account of itself, but not quite enough. I'm betting something with four feet got ahold of his one leg, but not enough to get the job done. That must be one whale of a rooster you've got there, I expect he'll heal.

Thanks for all the thoughts. He belonged to my SIL to begin with, and her guess is he got into with something four legged also, whilst protecting his girls. But what I dont know tonight, that should tell me more, is what does Punkin look like? If he's roughed up, then I'll know it was them, because I guarantee, even if Big Guy lost, he didn't lose easily.

Will update in the morning.

Speaking of updates... Ross, what's happening with your hatch?

Oh no!!!! I hope he heals up quick.

Maybe he'll accept being #2 and will integrate back in being lower in the pecking order? (I hope)

It's good to know what to look for. I think it will work out. Just has to have time to heal.

I have 3 out and 3 more pips. One is the other CLB from Ravyn and the other 2 are my crosses. Nothing from the 3 Silkie eggs. :( I hope something changes.

Okay!!! So far 2 chicks!!!! One CLB which looks like a cockerel and one CLB/Alsteirer cross. The cross has a weird fluid filled sack just behind its hip joint.....can anyone tell me what this is?

It does not look like yolk either. Unless it busted underneath it's skin. It's very floppy. Lol!!!!

Glad you found out what ie was but sorry that it might not be curable. I know you'll give him a fighting chance! :hugs

Very interesting. I watched a video today of how they cull male chicks. I hope they hurry up with this! That would be wonderful!

I hope he's ok. Maybe put some of that blue kote stuff on it. Please do update in the morning!

Oh, yeah--I made sure that the ventilation holes are at least 6 inches from the side of the bookshelf--there are 2 pencil-sized holes on the end away from where you slide out the tray.

Ans actually, I should probably quadruple post... @ronott1 , should I go bounce in Northern California?
