She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

Yes! But only a pair at the moment, and she isn't laying consistently. He's a frizzle blue, she's a cuckoo. But they are in with 2 silkie girls, so I'm going to set those cross eggs.
I have considered getting either cochins or silkies for their broodiness, but haven't decided yet. SC's popcorn silkies make me consider it. I'd just replace their eggs with eggs from my other birds.

Mine will be a year old this spring, and have not even hinted at being broody. But you could always give it a shot.

How are your Welsummers doing?

I actually culled the roosters, and will be getting hatching eggs from a breeder a little later this summer. They were just hatchery stock, and the more I learned, the more I decided that it would be better to just get some better base genetics. So the hens I had are just in the production flock, covered by dark cornish roosters.

So when collecting eggs for hatching, do you have any tips or tricks? Do you store your eggs on a turner while gathering? How selective are you on size, egg shell quality, etc. Do you have your hens on supplemental vitamins prior to collecting?

I have cartons on the counter and put something under one end, turning the carton 3 times a day, I set the largest, cleanest, normal shaped, best colour and pore less eggs that are collected in 7 days or fills the incubator whichever comes first.
Eta. No supplements so far.

I'm sure you could, but I believe for the most part, caponizing is rarely done any more, except for the small specialty production farmers.

It came up in my local thread, so I decided to look into it out of curiosity... I wasn't looking to do the procedure , just information. I'm not going to be pulling out the melon baller for chickens, let's say that.

BTW: Thank you.

Here is a shot of a couple of my turkey babies at one week. The big guy is 175g...
They look great!! Makes me miss the peas! (But not the crying!)
Lockdown stats from last night: Not good, but better than the last one. 14/27 total 10/11 from the splash pen 4/16 from the black. 4/16 makes me think one hen started submitting first. I've seen him with all of them in the last few weeks, and I will start collecting his eggs again today for the weekend set, so hopefully the extra 4 weeks gave him a little time to spread the :love
Good luck! Hopefully fertility will be better next set. I did my 14 day candling (it was only my second time candling!...can you believe that????) last night and so far all 11 eggs I set are looking good! :fl for is both!
are turkey eggs similar to hatching chickens?
I think turkey eggs are a little harder to hatch then chicken eggs. Walnut would know better. But I think the larger fowl tend to have a harder time getting out of the shell.

I keep them on the counter and try to turn them twice a day. I was reading an article that said if the eggs are 1-7 days old, they really do not need to be turned. It's more beneficial on eggs that are older. But I still try to do it, just to be on the safe side. I do not give my girls any supplements but they are spoiled! Besides chicken feed crumbles, I give them fermented feed, table scraps, fodder, and either yogurt or buttermilk. So far I've had great success with hatching their eggs.

Oh and I forgot to post that I decided to give my broody 4 eggs today! She's separated from the flock and has been sitting on air for 3 days. So I guess we'll see if she will hatch some babies. This is my very first broody experience!

I've looked into it too. I saw that word on a post once and decided to look it up because I didn't know what it meant and once I started reading I had to read the whole thing! I don't think I could ever actually do it myself, but it's interesting!

thanks.  I guess, shipped eggs are shipped eggs, if they are chicken, turkey, or duck?  still about 50/50 to make it to hatch?

good luck, bud.

I seriously contemplating seeing if the wife is up for another round of hatching, and try to sell all of these......lol

Some of the more game type fowl are more difficult because theyre more fragile.

Thats why i have three cochin hens, before i got a good bator that was my plan, theyre young yet but also no sign of broodiness here :(

So, I watched a video on caponizing. My question is do they do that to turkey Tom's as well?

I looked into caponizing, i dont think youd want to try it on a turkey because their meat is still good for a longer period of time vs. how the rooster would have testosterone in a lesser period of time. Walnuts the best to approch about any turkey topic and lets hope shes feeling alright today.
