She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

Question for you experts. Today is day 21 for my eggs. I'm using a Brinsea Mini Advanced, and on day 18 I filled the reservoir full, removed the turner and locked them down. They are in a classroom at my child's school and I wasn't able to candle before I locked down. There are 2 eggs. Today when I went in the classroom and checked them there was no sign of anything. I'm worried about how the humidity level was during incubation since another teacher with the same incubator told this teacher to just fill both reservoirs because that's what she does when she hatches duck eggs each spring. So I'm a bit fearful that the humidity level was too high!

At this point, I just keep letting them be for another day or two, right? They're on opposite sides of the 'bator, should I put them closer to each other? Should I candle for internal pips or just let them be? This is our second attempt in the class, the first one failed (I think non fertilized eggs).

I just keep thinking "c'mon chickies! Hatch for the kids!"
I'd give them another 24 and candle them. Sorry that they aren't popping out for you. I'd be afraid the humidity was too high as well.

No they were not shipped. I picked them up personally 1200 miles away. Lol

Oh sorry. Did it pip, yet?

I have the mini too. So you filled both wells? For lockdown, I fill one side, then I put a (don't laugh) lipstick cap in the other side and fill that. When I filled both wells humidity was to high. The one well and the cap puts my humidity at 75%. I don't have the adviced model, just the Eco. What's it's saying humidity is at? if there's no external pips, it won't hurt to candle them real quick. And if there's condensation it might let a little humidity out when you open.

Where do you check the humidity? Do I need to scroll through the programming to find it? It just shows temp, days left, and if it's turning on the screen. And yes, I filled both wells for lock down, and I think the teacher was filling both throughout the whole procress.

There is definitely condensation on it. I'll see if I can candle them after school today and see if there is something going on.

I'm sorry, I do not know. I have the non-digital model with my own dial hygrometer mounted inside. Does anyone know if the mini advanced reads humidity? If she was filling both wells the whole incuation days 1-18, then that might be a problem. That would mean your humidity was around 100%, which is way to high. The eggs would have a real hard time loosing moisture. But me and Amy were on a thread a long time ago with a girl that accidentally filled both wells the whole time and had major temp issues and both her two eggs hatched healthy chicks. So it is possible!

@RubyNala97
 did you ever say what your findings were with that fabric that absorbs well?  If you did I missed it. What was it called again, and what did you find?

Yes, but not on this thread. It's a material called zorb and I did experiment with it and it worked great. When used as a wick it increased humidity to around 80% (I will use a smaller size next time) and kept it there for 3 days straight without needing to have an extra water added!

That's good to know though. Thanks

I'll give it another day, I may try candling super quick tomorrow morning before the kids show up to class and see if anything is going on. At least the temp has been perfect the whole time! I'm not sure the humidity was that high the whole time, I think the first week (ish) it was only one level. When I candled about day 10ish the air cells looked good, didn't seem too small or too big I thought.

I'm starting to feel like hatching and I don't get along.

At this point I'm just going to drop off the 2 EE's I'm picking up on Thursday in the class and let the class think they hatched....

Oh, I and I played around with it, there's no humidity reader on it. I'll need to pick something up before I hatch again.

In my defense, it was the octagon 20 thread, so that doesn't count! ;)

If hand turning is feasible (which I know it's not for a lot people) the mini Eco is awesome! Especially now that I know that the advanced doesn't even read humidity! Has double the capacity and is less then half the price! Ok, sorry, rant over. I love this hygrometer. It fits perfect on the back wall of the mini, doesn't interfere with room or touch the eggs and is super easy to recalibrate before each hatch. Oh and it's like $5 online.

I HAVE AN INTERNAL PIP!! (Yes, I did need all caps for that
big_smile.png
)

One egg is had a shell too dark to see, but the other one has an internal pip I could see when I candled today (day 22), and the chick was breathing and we saw the beak open a bit. How long should I let it be like that? Should I poke a hole with a pin into the air cell tomorrow morning if no external pip?

I'm so relieved, and it gives me more hope for the dark shell one (but I have 2 chicks being picked up on Thursday, so if only 1 hatches, it won't be lonely)
