Well the broody Cochin and Turkey drew their last straws. Each killed a chick or two and I stole All the eggs... Now I have three hatchers and a fourth piped of the four eggs I saved after candling. Had never candled thru the sets while they were outside so I had just now pulled clears... Was ugly and I'm glad I caught em n stole my babies back

I'm sorry about your babies. That's one of the reasons that I have been hesitant to try a broody. If it always had a storybook ending I'd never fill my incubator...but that seems to be a much more likely outcome than not.

Oh goodness... I have my first broody OEGB. I'm scared.

Oh and my duck is definitely finally committed to her nest.
Hissing at me!

I know that chickens were hatching eggs long before people were hatching chicken eggs, and either way you can't guarantee an outcome.

If I were to be hatching ONLY for sustainable flock purposes, where I can gain a few or lose a few with no real worries, I'd certainly try broodies. But with the cost of shipped eggs and the need for a good outcome, I meddle, and I have respectable results. I do have plenty of room for improvement, though.

I'm done collecting turkey eggs for the season and I may let the ladies try to hatch some.

Thanks you guys, WV :hugs

The black Cochin hatched the last four eggs I gave her. I took the chicks tho when she was throwin em outa the nest, and thought I'd jus let her hatch these an do the same thing, no can do. The Jenny was hatched and raised from a broody, so I thought she might do a little better, nope... This was only her first clutch. The loses are more annoying than anything, I don't need the babies to fill an order or anything, and I have 40 other babies looking at me

I wanna add that I know these girls aren't good mammas so far, but they are Great incubators. I planned for these problems from them, when setting them under the hens, I had some set close to the same time in the bator, so they could grow up tugther. The four who developed, are hatching, I have 3/4 right now an #4 is piped. I might plan to pull eggs at day 18 in the future unless someone turns up as a good mama.

Another possibility is to give them some of the current CM cockrels, these are auto sexing at hatch. I might let them Attept the raising with these 3 day old chicks that have their legs under em... I know some hens will adopt an others wont... What do u guys think?
