What's the sock method?

The sock method is a cheap version of the no crow collar. A no crow collar is around $25 and there was no guarantee it would work. So we tried the cheap/free methods.

At first we tried a Velcro cord wrap but my husband was concerned that it didn't flex and the rooster kept pulling on the edge to take it off. So, I took one of my kids mismatched toddler socks and cut the tube off. I folded it into thirds and put it on the lower part of Sue's neck nestled between the feathers. I like this approach better as I know it has plenty of stretch to it. Sue's been wearing his sock for 3 days and the change in volume is drastic.

Nice idea . For some reason the collars are around 100$ out here. I am using a Velcro cable tie, but I need to refit it about once a week

Will the mother take to the chick how old are the others?
I think she will. She only had 3 eggs, 2 of them hatched and this last one in my bra. I gave her 10 new chicks and she adopted them all no problem. The 10 new ones are about 5-6 days old. Hers are 2 days and 4 days old now, and i think this little one is coming tonight. It's now pipped! :) I was expecting a staggered hatch with her eggs because i never noticed for a few days that she was incubating eggs and the other hens continued laying on top of her so they're all mixed up. I had removed the least developed, which left 4. Then one of them died and she was down to these final 3.

the tension is killing me I wish I had some eggs to hatch. I,m waiting for my new incubator to arrive that my darling daughters have bought me for my birthday

Wow that looks awesome!
They are going to love it! I
saw a staple gun made for a woman's hand... After we had done all our building. Lol so I know what you mean. Oh we also used those curved staples that you drive with a hammer. I pounded my thumb so hard that day, I can still feel the throbbing lol!

Ouch! Luckily I found an electric stapler in the bag of all the regular ones. It was a lifesaver! I can't imagine how bad the blisters would have been without it! I didn't realize you had to push so hard when stapling. Once I got the hang of it I stapled like every other little square on the hardware cloth. That run is like Fort Knox!!

Stapling does suck! Ours kept jamming every 3rd staple putting it up.  Just yesterday I started painting the run as the rain was getting to it. Let's just say it's not by best painting job since I'm using a roller and mashing it through the hardware cloth in some places.

That would have drove me crazy, if it kept jamming! It was already aggravating every time I'd run out of staples. They should make a compartment that holds extras and just keeps feeding them in! I was wondering about painting the run too. It must be hard with all the hardware cloth. Post a pic of your run! :)

I wanted to know too!

Just skimming to catch up and didn't see that. O well, I'm not much for drama anyway. Anyone get offended and leave?

Yup, NB.

I have tons of those to toddler socks. I will try that when mine gets older and figures out how to really crow. He is 7 wks and today was the second day he tried crowing at 7 am. Sounds like an animal is dying!

Good thinking! Thanks for explaining. I hope I never need it, but nice to know I can try something for free!

Amy I am with you. I also meddle with the eggs at hatching time. I don't necessarily remove them right away, but I have assisted in helping a couple of them get out. I had real good luck with that. Can you tell me what you keep your humidity temperatures at for the first 18 days and the last three. Usually on the last three for me, I have the humidity set at 65 or 70. I'm hatching some eggs right now and the humidity is set and itjumps back and forth between 36 and 42% does that sound all right or normal or what ? I think that's about what I usually have it at. I've been having a little bit of trouble and I'm just wondering if I'm not doing something right. Shouldn't may humidity be higher for the first 18 days? Can you give me some input? Thanks

I don't have any little socks around here but I do have Velcro, I actually bought the wider kind. It actually has worked for me, I just had to keep adjusting it until I had it right.my rooster also hated it and then he finally got used to it and it doesn't seem to bother him. He still crows but very low volume. I think I'm going to get rid of him anyway, I don't like the way he's defeathering my hens.

The best way to determine what humidity you need is to candle and check your air cells. If they are getting too large, increase your humidity. If too small, decrease the humidity. 30-35% seems to be a good place to start for alot of us. A little higher if you have a Brinsea.
