I've had both male and female. In my college years I had my girl, who was a lot smaller than my son's boy....lol Both had pretty much the same temperment. Loving and gentle. The only time I've ever had one nip is when fingers are pushed in cage bars which is a big rat no no. Remi would get a bit "snappy" with his yogurt treats if you let him get away with it, but other than that he was pretty mello.

I usually make him back off. When I walk towards him most of the time he will walk away from me. I picked him up for mating and being a bit of a bully to the girls. He wanted all the treats. I'm still not sure if I'm supposed to look him in the eye or ignore him to get the point across that he's not important.
The two boys now will nip at nearly any finger that reaches into the cage, even if it's holding a bowl of food. Zoe was my favorite female. On the other hand I had a girl named Marcelle. Her middle name was "the dirty b$^&#".[IMG] So I guess it goes either way.
