She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

I went to bed after hearing muffled peeping, and I woke to one turkey in the hatching tray, humidity at 73%. It's still 18 hours early and I don't hear any more peeps going on right now so it can rest up and dry off a bit before it has company.

While the hatcher tray has plenty of room for the 30 turkey eggs that are in it, I had to put a divider in so that I can ID my Narri and Narri x BBB from the regular BBB poults. The Bourbon Reds should be easy enough.

Update, two more external pips!

I took my sister's three silkies that she had and I have to say, I'm kinda wishing I didn't. We'll see how it goes. I'll give it some time, but I don't know.

Were they already grown and set in their ways, or are you just not liking the silkies? Grab the razor

As you are going through your "weed and feed" process, I'd like to purchase some hatching eggs from you for my absolutely non pedigree production layer flock. I want to spice up my cartons, the bland ISA Brown color is boring. I have been crossing mine up as Easter Eggers and would love to have both Olive Eggers and darker brown egg layers. Non-show quality shell colors are fine with me, as are off colored birds.

As my window of opportunity to set eggs this year so that they mature before winter is closing, it may have to wait for next year...if you are willing.

I'm going for carton color, too. I've got the hybrid brown egg layers, white egg layers, and Easter Eggers, but I want those chocolate eggs. The eggs my first group hatched from were very nice, but I hope to get a shade or two darker. I didn't realize what a strict culling curve there was for BCM to get the correct SOP when I bought them. I don't want show birds, but I do sell extra chicks, so I either need to breed them to type to sell as BCM, or go more towards egg color and just sell them as pet quality dark brown egg layers. I've never sold hatching eggs before, but maybe by next year I will be there. I'm hoping to get about 20 or so started this summer so I can see what kind of eggs the second generation is laying by next spring. At least down here winter doesn't mean a total shutdown on breeding

So after a week I have finally been able to read all 90 pages. My first hatch should arrive Monday. I have 36 going into lock down some are pure Americana and some are Americans and blue marans cross. And my americanas have won blue ribbons so should get some pretty birds. I don't care much for breed standard honestly just breed what I like to look at lol. I have 8 lorpes, 1 rir, an Americana roo and hen, sold the other hens someone wanted then more than I, 3 buff orphington, 3 blue marans, a black copper marans roo and pullet, and 2 Plymouth barred rocks. Think that is all the chickens. I also have 4 heritage turkey hens and a Tom, 9 west indie ducks, and 2 khaki Campbell ducks. They all mostly free range. I have a turkey trying to go broody hope she waits until she has about a dozen eggs to sit on. Fingers crossed. This thread is awesome. Humidity queen you have the northern accent easy for a southerner to pick out.
Far as food you need some brains and eggs. Pork brains you will never be the same it is delicious.

Wow, all 90 pages? Welcome to the thread. It's pretty fun. You will get some good information, some different practices to compare to, and a lot of utter nonsense.
Yeah, how about that "no accent"?

She ain't from around here, is she?

Thanks for posting these! Now I know what to expect to see. I know ill get freaked out, and have to keep reminding myself it's OK not to see much in the blue eggs.
I can't even see what's in the pics from candling. LOL I took the pics with the candling setting on my phone. That's the only reason there's any illumination.

Welcome to the convo! Northerners don't have accents. It's the lack of accent that makes it easy to pick us out.

LOL No!! No pork brains!!

They are grown. She just wanted to get rid of the silkies. As a matter of fact chances are one of these is the mother to the one I have as I hatched her from eggs I got from my sister. Mine is in much more pristine condition though. I understand they have a lot of chickens and bigger range and independence, but I was a little dissapointed to tell you the truth. And apparently they think the nest boxes are beds. I went out twice last night and moved them out. It's the quality and condition that I am a little dissapointed in. I wanted to them to use for my showgirl project next year, but I don't know. The one smaller one has these big thick ugly feet not as bad as the godzilla chicken, but the same concept. The toes/nails on them look awful. One is either missing the tip of a toe or the whole nail. I just am really surprised. No, I don't visit my sister. I love her, but have no desire to go down there so I don't know much about the set up or what she has for her flock. I just know they average around 100 and they are considering cutting way back. I really think they should.

That's right...no accent. Just plain boring northern talk.

Missing toes, or parts of toes, are common on silkies if not culled. It's genetic, so it is bred forward.

Up here in the frigid north, missing toes is also quite common with frostbite. I bought some started pullets late in the winter where they were in a trailer before pickup and have about 40 with missing partial or full digits, they froze in the trailer and blackened and fell off here. One hen has only a tiny "thumb" and the pad on the bottom of her foot. She walks with a little limp, but she uses the nest box and roosts like the others.

about the only thing I don't see is a mule or maybe there's one under that turkey welcome to the tread our queen started . you have to read it every day or you'll be a week behind again. my momma ate brains and eggs .those were the days I skipped breakfast But now pokesalad and eggs are good If Amy thinks head cheese is bad and pig feet. I wonder what she would do if she opened the fridg. and found the head looking back her or the chittlins soaking in the kitchen sink. southern life scratch em on the head today have them for breakfast tomorrow.

did this as an experiment. To multi quote from the phone, just keep tapping the quotes of the posts you want to quote and they keep adding up. It's still a pain, because to respond individually you have to go back and click between the individual quotes. No small feat with my thick fingers.
Speaking of fingers, how 'bout queenie's dainty little mitts? Those poor eggs...
POS phone? Quite the mouth on you, young lady

Ok, here goes mine for practice!

As SC said, just keep hitting the quote as you browse along. As I find posts that I want to reply to, I just hit the quote button. It will put a little red number beside the "quote and reply" button and will keep counting up as you click quote.
When you multi-quote on a phone, it can be a pain to figure out where to put your reply so it comes out right. I post more from my phone than I do from my tablet at home. Of course the work computer is the easiest lol
Thank you, I think I got it! I rarely get on my computer, I have little ones running around so it's much easier to keep up on my phone!

I'm so glad I was born in the south. If you have to cut a hole in the ice to go fishing, it's time to move. Down here an "ice hole" is something totally different

That's my concern and partially why I am dissapointed..

Which is probably the most likely scenerio here. Like I said my silkie came from her silkie's eggs and mine is in pristine condition, but she's never wintered outside yet. They hatched last November and wintered inside. (Something I have no plans to ever ever do again.) But I also am sure they never get any kind of nail/beak maintenance either, mine do.

I can handle the chittlins and gizzards and such. But head cheese??? I could even handle the fridge scenerio...just not eating it!!
