If I only had one breed, or a barnyard mix, I would probably let them range, but I would buy a livestock guardian dog to keep the critters at bay. Properly trained dogs can be a godsend for chickens. A lot of people in my area have coops with no runs, but they also have dead chickens in the street. That's why I build large pens. I want them to have as much space as possible while also keeping them safe. With so many breeds, I can't even let them out to range, so I keep dedicated garden vegetables for them in the summer, and plant greens for the winter. They like kale best of all
Let me give you a chronology lesson. Right now, you are red. I stand by my previous statement. Considering the fact that you are partial to a 9mm, I will hold this slap back, but bear in mind that mine is a Gen 4 Glock 21

My dogs stay close to mine during the day to keep other critters out while I'm not home, but they have nice big pens, inside my already-fenced yard. Won't have that luxury at my farm though, but we are going to try an automatic door and see how it goes. (I might have to buy some "test chickens" that I'm not so attached to first.) LOL

I looked at the 21, seriously, but liked the Sig better... and it came with a laser sight...

Actually, I think my favorite is my Beretta Cheetah 380. Found it at a gun show at the Armory. Older pistol, but shoots lovely! 380 ammo is just too expensive/hard to find these days!

Here are a couple of yesterday's hatch. The darker two are pure Narragansett, the lighter two are Narragansett base with a red gene.

Sooooooo cute!

Good gravy... I can't work and keep up with this thread!! Went to do one project and come back to several pages...!!!

I really like the Sig, but I'm just comfortable with the Glock. Maybe one day...

I have a Beretta 96FS...concealment is an issue but it sure does work nice.

While I was taking those poult pics, my "flock protector" was hovering over and drooling on them, and licking anyone who stepped off the cloth. I wouldn't trust him for 10 seconds with a live critter if I wasn't there to "correct" him.
