I agree with every single thing you said. I'm dying to see Montana, but I ain't lost nuthin in New YorkGet her did SC. Southern born Southern raised and when I die I'll be Southern dead. No matter where I go my heart will remain in Dixie. The wife wants to do travel nursing. We are both nurses. She is a pediatrics nurse and I am a trauma nut. So guess we could get free paid vacations, but there are only a couple places I have not been I would like to go. I would like to see Montana, Louisiana and Alaska. Been to most other Southern States. She wants to go to New York but I ain't lost nothing there!!!!
Why does she want to go to NY? I guess seeing the statue of liberty would be cool, but that's about it. I want to see Texas. Wouldn't mind seeing Montana either. I hear it's a beautiful state. Amy, I was a little confused by the second half of what you wrote, but I'm thinking you mean if you had multiple breeds, right? What if you only had one breed?
If I were raising pure breds, I would be less likely to free range for a couple reasons. One the monetary loss is greater, (even if the sentemental is not,) and two I would want to keep the line pure w/out having to seperate out to breed in case I had someone that wanted eggs, or I decided split second I wanted to hatch a certain breed. The only pure breds that I have that I would be using for breeding is the Spitzhaubens. I plan on them going in their own coop and run this fall, but I only plan on keeping 6 of them. I'm sperating them out this weekend to figure out (if I can) sexes and what I am keeping then the others will go on CL.
Also, I'm in the middle of the storm!! I was wondering if you had it up there too! I knew I shouldn't have opened up my mouth about power outages!!! So far I'm still okay...thank god!!

Sheesh, everyone's got these nice big places--we've got 0.17 acres in a neighborhood, with a limit of 11 birds, no roosters (or, as the ordinance actually reads, "quacking ducks"--too bad I realized we're not set up for muscovies...). Our yard is fenced in, but since it's chain link, and we're the corner lot, and our house sits back in the corner of the lot (just wide enough to walk on the side and in the back) everything is visible from the streets! Our coop is good sized--100 square feet (yay converted outbuildings) so I don't feel too bad when I leave the birds in, for whatever reason. For instance, I'm redoing the run, and haven't had a chance to finish. I'll need to fix the gate, too. I usually let them out into the yard in the afternoon and evening--our boxer is perfectly fine with them, even when we have chicks (though that was helped last Fall when the broody gave her a bloody nose when the dog wanted a closer look at the fuzzy chew toys!) There are enough crows and ravens around to keep the hawks away, and the dog seems to keep everything else away (except rats...) Since I can't have a rooster anyway, keeping breeds pure isn't a concern. When I don't let them range, it's usually because I don't plan on being around at dusk, or we're having people over and we've just cleaned poo from the walkways...
