Hi! Thread lurker here.

I have read it all and I think you're my type of crazy.

My question to red, blue and purple teams- which incubator did you start off with? Anyone go the homemade route the first time around?

I have the Chinese knock-off version of the Janoel 48. Plastic, yellow lid. Its the only one I've ever used, but have considered making one from either a wine cooler, a dishwasher, or a microwave!


And you don't have to be crazy to like this thread....

I am not quite certain yet. So far both myself and my husband favor our Dominiques as they are curious and more friendly towards people than the others but not sure if I would do pure breeds. I think I am aiming at breeding some black sex linked chicks- hoping to recoup some coop money first.

I am also very interested in making some pretty splash babies down the line, maybe. But no definite direction yet. I was very tempted by a CL listing for some D'uccles but did not get them since our coop was still under construction.

@WVduckchick . Yes. Many times our homemade thing does cost more in the long run. But I really think we did a good job and it's something we can be proud of. I enjoy making things with my hands. With the chicks now in the coop I can go back to my studio to make things in there, too.

Good score on the jigsaw. I asked for a table saw for my last birthday.

I am not quite certain yet. So far both myself and my husband favor our Dominiques as they are curious and more friendly towards people than the others but not sure if I would do pure breeds. I think I am aiming at breeding some black sex linked chicks- hoping to recoup some coop money first.

I am also very interested in making some pretty splash babies down the line, maybe. But no definite direction yet. I was very tempted by a CL listing for some D'uccles but did not get them since our coop was still under construction.

I myself, love mixes. Especially surprise ones where you aren't sure what you are going to get..lol I have a couple pure Japanes Bantams, silkies and some Silver Spangled Appenzeler Spitzhaubens, but mostly I have mixed. I want to start a showgirl line since I can't seem to get my hands on any here.

I am turning away from pure breed chickens in favor of backyard birds. By a couple of generations of unselective breeding of random stock, I now have jubilee and cuckoo Cochin-Brahma-caunas. These should be nice big dual purpose birds, with the second purpose more as broody than layer. They should be good slow growing meat birds, though!

This thread is how my brain works, with random dashes in all directions. I work full time at home doing complex telephony system engineering projects, and dip back in here to wash my brain cells quite often.

Hubby brought home a table saw for me one day, a very basic one too. I said "I don't know that I'll ever use that"... I was kinda scared of it at first. Now I'm lost without it!!
I'm currently working on a new wooden candling box!

I think I do like the idea of mixes as I have one coop. I don't want to have separate pens with separate roosters, sort, collect, label eggs and compare and remove chickens to follow SOPs. I really don't have time for that, I work full time. Add that stuff to my normal days and I would work double-full time. I have no plans on showing them, just eating some eggs and having pretty looking chickens. And if I can recoup some costs with their eggs or babies, I'll do that too.

I started out thinking I wanted purebreds. But now I'm thinking exactly what you just stated. Double full-time is right! And then some! I also have ducks, so throw in that extra work... and well...

I'm still going to keep one or two roosters from my lavender orpingtons and will let them breed, and I may hatch a few to check their genetics (since they may or may not be related). And I'm still going to have to see how my big dark brahma boy behaves with all the girls, and I also have an EE rooster. Those guys, I cannot and will not part with. Even if they have to live separately by themselves.

I bought my first table saw this year. Never needed one BC. Man, I love that thing. Sure beats a chalk line and skill saw

That's why I laid all that out yesterday. It's how I started, and it has turned into a lot of work. If you're just doing it for fun, it's too stressful. One day down the road I see myself downsizing and focusing on the BCM and possibly the EEs. If I want to stick to a more pure breed, I may swap EEs for some purebred Ameraucanas
