Anyone eaten a silkie? Quite frankly she's not a very nice bird and I'd like to replace her. No matter how much we sit with the chickens and feed them treats and everything else She's them only one that won't come near. I can't sell her as a silkie because she's a cross and I can't imagine many people wanting her anyway lol anyway what do you guys do with birds you just don't want? Eat um? Give them away?

I have not, but I have a good mexican friend that takes all my unsold roosters. He said they are very good if you like dark meat

If she's laying age I'd try and sell her as a laying hen, charge $5-15 depending on how well she lays. If no buyers give her away. Someone will take it.

My tomatoes are almost done for the year as it is so hot. I have taken some cuttings to root for fall when it starts to cool down.
Lockdown for the bcms last night in coolerbator. Don't know if they will do any thing as not able to see inside. Temp and humidity are remaining stable 98.5 to 99 and 65%. I dropped the temp a bit for hatching. I am using a paper towel tube cut up to stand them up as it doesn't cover as much of the egg as the cartons.

Paper towel tubes are an excellent idea! Let's you space them out away from each other too. Good luck!!

I plan on making a "shutter" or door for it, later on. But he thinks it should be sealed tight and insulated. I keep telling him you have to have the ventalation, especially if I am using teh deep litter method. I just packed his **** in his truck and told him thank you for the help, you can go, I'll finish it myself. Honestly, I'd rather do it myself. He doesn't do anything by plan, he cobb jobs EVERYTHING. He uses no logic. Do you know how many times we had to redo something and do it the way I told him to do it in the first place??? I'm happy to be rid of him, just ticked that he thought he was going to give me the ultimatium that if I didn't do it his way he wasn't helping.

I really don't have a problem with him. I enjoyed sparring with him, and he could do it without getting angry. I don't know why he left all of a sudden

I remember seeing that the dark skin made them very desirable for roasting. In China, I think. But if you are ok to eat her, hey, I say go for it.

Totally off topic, but what kind of rooster is that in your avatar? My EE is starting to look exactly like him

Jack is an EE, and a very good Daddy. He's made some wonderful sex link chicks. People say that EE roos are nasty, but Jack is a good roo. I have spent some time training him. We have an understanding!

To who ever suggested the Amish style vent: chimney from floor level to roof, that's a brilliant idea. I could put in my floor level vent under the perches, and simply put a piece of plywood over the studs on either side of the vent, so the air would draw up through the stud space. The only draw back to that would be condensation issues... might rot out the siding. I'll have to do some brainstorming with hubby on that one. Or, I could simply put in the vent, and see how it goes. can always cover it if I don't like it.

The old ones were built as a freestanding box chimney at the center of the room, not at the walls. I will see if I can find a photo.
