She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

Folks, nobody ticked me off, and I sure didn't mean to dis ya, but with new posts coming in as I read them, I was totally neglecting so many other things...so I had to unsubscribe. I still peek in on break, but at least now I don't have that darn "1 New Post" at the bottom of the screen...;-]

So what is the status of the remainders?? Did I miss that post?? What did you get, what's left and is Blobbly really done???

Left the last 5 in the bator, no pips as of this morning, so we shall see in a bit, when I go home. Candled them last night when I transferred the last polish to the brooder. Blobby's air cell was somewhat enlarged, but I'm guessing it quit around day 20. Another had a nicely enlarged air cell, and looked like an internal pip. I thought I saw a little movement, but its so black, I can't be sure if it was just wishful thinking! So I left them all for one more day. At least I got over 50% when the last polish hatched last night!

Finally caught up! I swear you have to check this every 30 mins to not get behind!

So @scflock what are you doing to keep your chickies cool during these freaking dog days of summer? Mine are dying outside right now. They have plenty of water and also placed frozen jugs of water in the coop for them to cool off by. Its funny watching them peck at it.

Oh btw chickens love the color yellow. I found that out the hard way today. I had painted two fingernails on each hand yellow and the rest a seafoam green. When I was in there to pet them and spend some time they attacked my yellow nails! Trying to rip them off and pecked me really hard! I had to hide my those fingernails in order for them to calm down. It was really funny. So now I taunt them with my fingers.

NT, look back 2 pages. I posted a couple pics of portals for young chicks mixing in with the main flock. They are super cool & may help you integrate your young ones. It gives them an escape route if they need it. I know what you mean about this post too. I've gotta get back to the million things I have to do but then I get sucked in and look at the clock and time has flown by!

I did the same thing with the "other" thread. There's no need to try and keep up with the day to day posting on the thread, but we're always here if you want to ask something. Now go, if you must

You guys have me so intrigued with this rooster talk. I didn't know any of this stuff. Is there anything you can suggest I read to prepare me for caring for roosters. Why should you not let them mate infront of you? Also, I read holding them a lot when they are younger is bad. Why? I hold my chickens all the time but I won't know for awhile which sex they are because they are silkies. Also, why cover the nest boxes??

They love blue, too. My wife had hers done last week, and Silas will bypass a tomato to peck her fingers

All I could do was cover half of their pens with roofs and give them as much shade as possible

It must be any color then. Really. I mean I have never had a problem with my fingernails unpolished, but I have a WC Blue polish that loves to peck my teeth! LoL!!! I smile in front of her and she tries to get them. It's pretty funny.

After looking through a lot of photos and reference materials, it looks like the coop ventilator chimneys are more a Michigan adaptation. Our summers are warm but not hot, our big problem is ground moisture from frost break through summer with all the rain, and the same in the fall. So I think the plan was to pull warm, dry air in from the windows, sweep low across the floor, then up the chimney and out. I saw photos of ventilators that ended just below the rafters. The coops that were around here are pretty much gone now, I'll have to venture farther out to try to find one.

In a hotter climate I could see where a ridge vent would be a better choice, or in a drier climate perhaps a gable vent.

It's cool to see how people worked with their climate instead of against it.
