She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

So I am sad this morning. My sweet blue cochin which I swore was a pullet crowed this morning....we more like squeaked. LoL!!!!! He was trying to copy Zax and Gump as they crowed which made me sad. The one I know for sure is Rooster has not crowed at all and they are the same age 10 weeks old. Both hatched on 04/11. Time to post some roosters and pullets on craigslist to make room for more. It breaks my heart. I was soooo looking forward to Blue being a hen.

sorry for it not turning out to be a pullet. always a 50/50 shot

So mutt egg has fully pipped can hear peeping but no further progress. Very active in the shell still so don't think it needs help yet.

Oh no! I'm sorry

It dimpled about 22 hours ago, fully pipped about 5 hours ago, steady peeping, specially if I mess with the egg.

I would not assist a duck for at least 48 hours from first pip unless it was in real distress. They take alot longer to finish the process, after pipping, than chickens do.

I would give it about 12 to 18 hours after full pip. Its sounds like its working in the right direction. if you notice lack of peeps and movement I would work towards intervening but that is just me. Oh sorry did not realize it was a duck egg. I missed that somewhere.

okie dokie I shan't worry about it then for another day :) It still seems good and strong inside it's shell :)

While SweetPDZ bought me time in the infamous floods of 2003 that led up to the lawsuit to keep our birds, it did zero-zip-zilch for the compost, for the yards, and didn't do much other than slightly mask odor.

Pelletized gypsum is magic in a bag.  If you have clay or hardpan soil, spread some on and water it in, come back in the morning with a shovel.  Put it on your potatoes, too.  It aerates the soil so that water drains more easily.  Also good on dog spots to help combat the ammonia.

The birds pick it up and eat it, they don't gorge on it, they take what they need and then leave the rest just as they do with grit.  It makes a big difference, and it's not harmful.

Menards, Home Depot, and most feed stores carry it in the lawn and garden section.

I was also planning on using the sweet PDZ. Thanks, Walnut, I'm going to look into this. Saved the name in my phone so I can research! :)

I can imagine the disappointment. All of my flock are still too young to tell so I know I'll be dealing with this a lot! Sorry for ya!

Amy the coop looks great!! I can't believe the pics of the babies... They get big soo fast! Adorable!

Thanks! I know soon they will be fully feathered.
Amy, I agree with Friday. My thought is this: If you have a structure that is well supported, (without a sill sitting directly on bare ground) why not just put a hardware skirt around the building, and use DL on the bare ground. It would save you a bundle, not to mention the frustration of trying to build a floor in an already finished structure, and it would give you a maintenance free DL instead of having to maintain a wood floor, and worry about moisture damage from the DL. The only reason I wouldn't recommend this is if your coop is sitting on an area prone to standing water or flooding. But, that doesn't look to be the case.
Nope. No flooding.

The black and whites. Mine are mostly feather footed and a couple have brown/black/white, but I have both the Ameraucana type face and the more blocky type birds. Mine hatched mid April and are about 9 weeks and are a pretty good size already. If they lay as well as the gold EE hen that mothered several of them, I will be very happy. She lays better than the young red sex links.
The black and whites are the Silver laced appenzeller Spitzhaubens. The only true white egg layers I have out there to my knowledge.

I understand that. I had 11 Spitzhaubens I wanted to keep 4 girls and 2 roos to pen out next spring for breeding purposes. I sold the other 5, 4 of what I was pretty sure was males, but sold them as straight run. Last night after I got them in the coop and was watcing I determined I had 4 roos and two girls. This morning when I went to check on them one of the ones I still thought was a girl crowed at me!!

Which means, I have one girl and 5 boys, which also means that if I was right with the ones that I sold, there were only 2 girls out of 11!! Augh. Now I am going to have to try to sell 4 Spitzhauben cockerels!
