Don't worry about what you don't have any control over. What will be will be!

My other big news from the weekend is the flock swap.
My polish haven't been selling, and I have debated advertising the adult breeding flock. A woman called Saturday from my polish chick ad and said that her 13 year old son had one polish hen that he was showing in 4H, and wanted to start breeding some. She wanted to know if I had any adults available. After talking with her and her son, I decided to offer them Damien and 6 hens for $100. That's very cheap for laying hens, but I was ready to move on, and felt good about selling a breeding flock to an interested young man. They said they wanted them. I have been wanting purebred Ameraucanas for a while, but didn't have the pen space. I had not seen any good ones on CL, so I decided to check out the Ameraucana Clubs website to see if there were any breeders reasonably close, and there was on an hour away! I called her, and she said that she had 17 three week old BBS chicks that she had not advertised yet. I offered her $100 for all of them, and she accepted. So after a full afternoon of chicken swapping, I am the proud new owner of a flock of purebred ameraucanas. The chicks were :8 blue, 7 black, and 2 splash

That was definitely meant to be to go down that smoothly!

Now in my corner, I have this guy messaging me on a local Facebook swap page about poults. He wanted some Narragansett poults for his boys to raise as pets, then said nevermind he found turkeys for $7. I said great, they will enjoy eating them for Thanksgiving as they are likely Broad Breasted. A few days later he then asked the seller and found out yes, they are Broad Breasted, and now he expects me to:
1. Match the Broad Breasted price
2. Short another customer who has already scheduled a pick up
3. Deliver them to him 40 minutes away because he is having truck problems

And he's annoying as all get out on FB. I'm about to block him.

Funny this would come up today, but our power went out at work at some point over the weekend and our UPS is showing that it needs a new battery. Its an old one, and I have no idea how old the battery is. But I just looked it up and a replacement battery is $359.99!! Ouch. Glad its not my money. But it sure would have saved me some headache if I had noticed that it needed replaced before now!

Next time get one with a test schedule and an alarm...;-]

LOL! What nerve!

The small incubators are only 40-75 watts, even my Leahy. My homebuilt is 175 watts, comparable to a PC.

I think my unit says 80-85, but I've never tested it to see if it actually draws that.

Next time get one with a test schedule and an alarm...;-]

Well, that would have been a swell idea! LOL
I've only been at this job for a little over 2 years. Inherited all the past folks' crap. And its upstairs, out of sight, out of mind. That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!

I do most of my buying and selling on CL. My wife and I don't FB, so CL is the best way to reach a broad audience. The internet is the best thing that ever happened to buying and selling, but it comes with a price. You have to wade through a sea of idiots to get to the serious people. I have met some great people from CL, but I have also met some that I regretted giving my address. I have learned, as I'm sure you have, that people that actually know what you have and know that they are good quality are willing to pay the fair price. I don't have to entertain the lowballers any more. "Oh, so you you can get chicks at the auction for $2? Well, good luck with that"

I hate people...

Maybe we can get NTBugTraq to come up with a CL reply filter. Call it "DooshTrac". You can even have that one for free, I won't trademark it

So I woke up to blinking clocks this morning. My worst fear, the power went out while I was sleeping! I went to bed at 12am up at 7am. Called the power company to ask how long my power was out. The lady says "you want to know how long the power was out while you were sleeping?" So I explained about my eggs and incubator and she was super nice and helpful then. Put me on hold and found out that they didnt do any work to get it back on so it probably was a quick off and on deal. I'll know for sure tonight when I candle. Fingers crossed!! Really thinking about starting a little piggy bank for a generator. But can you set up a generator to automatically go on when your power goes out or do you have to turn it on yourself?
Big bucks.

So here's my question of the day!: what kind of watering system does everyone use? Is the nipple system the way to go? Can anyone recommend one for me to buy?
Ditto that question. Who uses vertical nipple vs horizontal nipples?

I think the turners are over rated. I did the last two hatches w/o the turner and actually they were my best two hatches yet. Not saying it was hand turning that made them the best hatches, just that the automatic turner hadn't given me a better hatch rate than hand turning. Now, if you aren't able to turn 3xs a day then yes, of course it'd be better to have the turner.

In my next build, I'm going to go semi automatic. The eggs will be placed horizontally in a tray with dowels or something similar to line them up. The tray will be on drawer glides or something similar. Then, all I have to do is slide the tray several inches to the right or the left, and the eggs will roll. (stolen idea) I'll also keep one shelf available for egg carton setting and turning, just in case there are some trouble makers.

That's awesome! Good luck with the new flock!

I've been reading all about hatching the peas and from what I've read they are hard to hatch. One of the cardinal rules for peas is to hand turn. Much higher hatch rates with hand turning 3xday.

Yeah, I know you have a lot on your plate. Maybe I can let the little things go for a while...;)
My chicken operation has gotten so big (at least for me) that it sometimes feels overwhelming, but I still have the time and the room to do what I want, I just wouldn't want any more... I know, I know, that's what I said last year. Did I tell you I bought 17 chickens yesterday? :gig

I had never had any desire to keep chickens until those first 4 pullets, and I had no idea how much I would enjoy it. It's just so therapeutic. I think even if I weren't breeding and selling, I would still keep a small flock. I call them my "therapy chickens". You know that brother you talk about? I bet you don't think about him at all when you are working on coops and taking care of chicks:thumbsup

Me deciding to raise and keep chickens came from a number of different factors. But my therapist kept pushing me to start a hobby. And she wanted the hobby to include socializing with other people. So chickens and BYC became my thing! My children and I went through a rough divorce this past year. There's nothing that makes me happier then seeing them watch eggs hatch in an incubator or swing a hammer to build something for our coop. It's brought us together and given us many happy moments already and we're just warming up!

My sister has raised chickens for 6 or 7 years. Every time I talked to her she got on the topic of her chickens and I would zone out. Like, really??? They are chickens. Never had an interest in chickens. Then when I decided to do the Oviparous animal unit for first grade science and she offered my the bator and a couple dozen eggs and she would take the chicks back after hatch. I never checked my brand new thermometer I bought to use in it and it was quite off so we had an awful hatch that just yielded one chick. That's all it took. That one little loudmouth chick that had to be out with us whatever we were doing.
As for my brother, I seldom think of him at all...lol

I was thinking the same thing... staring into a boring ole Brinsea, not touching a thing? How horrific is that thought? LMAO!

But seriously, I hope your dad stays healthy for a long time and you get to keep your chickens and all! Don't worry about what you don't have any control over. What will be will be! And knowing you, you would still find a way to have a few chickens!

LOL. Thanks. I don't worry too uch. It's always at the back of my mind, but that's where my faith comes in. I'll handle that when I have to.

Big bucks.
