I have different results with every batch. Some take straight to the coop, some need to be carried for a few days. I'm still having a hard time with my Ameraucanas (pics to follow). In my bigger coops, I will leave them in it for a couple of days, but they still seem to want to stay outside when it starts getting dark. I've had to carry them at night for as much as a week, but I have also had some that learned after 2 days. The Polish were the worst. They had one of the biggest coops, and still roosted on their playset at night Alaska is definitely on my bucket list
Well these are silkie chicks. So not the brightest in the bunch from what I've heard! Lol.
Ok, here are some updated pics on the Ameraucanas. I am in love with these birds. The colors are beautiful, and I can't wait to see them all feather out. I got 17 total, and it's looking like about 50/50 cockerels to pullets, so if I wind up with 8 or 9 girls I will be in good shape. Three of them are 8 weeks old, so pretty much feathered out already. Even the solid blacks are beautiful. The ones I can't wait to see feather are the 2 splash. I think there's one girl and one boy, and they are very pretty Group shot: Think the big blue is a roo... Splash in the middle. Can't wait to see how that one feathers in: Pullet :fl Beautiful blue roo
I love the pics!! They look really beautiful & healthy!! My fav is the one standing to the left of the splash!
Sounds great!!!!! I will have CCLs laying by then too!! Maybe we could swap!!! LoL!!! Well actually they should start laying here at the end of the month. And Tate better get busy esp if you expecting anything to happen. I incubated BCM eggs for my first hatch and I got 2 out of 8 because 3 were shrink wrapped. The only way I could see anything was to candle in a completely dark room with a light source from the bottom and from the top. Then I could see inside the egg like normal, just slightly darker. Fun!! Fun!!! I might just wait to add a BCM hen and an olive egger hen to my laying flock. I will just get them from you!!!! :D
This is so good to know about candling dark eggs!!! I see so many threads with people asking for help with them!! Dark room + flash light at both ends!! Nice!!
My daddy's bday is next week (84years) so I am doing cake an ice cream this Sunday for him, so I have a couple busy days I'm looking at. I moved the little chicks (aren't so little anymore,) to the living room so my sister could take care of them easier and now I need to move them again so we have room and no one is sniffing 20 chicks. And then there's the cake.... I am doing a couple modling chocolate scultptures for this one and it's only the second time that I will have used modling chocolate (though, if I may pat myself on the back, the first try at modling chocolate was a success). Really looking forward to it, but at the same time nervouse too...lol Especially since I make my own modling chocolate.
I'm sure you'll do great! Especially after seeing your skills on the broncos cake! Enjoy celebrating the day with him!

The blue left of the splash is my favorite so far, too. Pretty sure he's a cockerel but really pretty and has a great disposition. I don't care if the rooster I keep is blue or black, since I have hens of both colors, so I will be selecting the one with the best personality. I still have nightmares about Damien

How are the peachicks today?

Happy Birthday to him!!!!!! Good luck with the decorating. I bet it will be beautiful!

Pics, please

Ruby stated early on that peafowl needed to be assisted. I have no experience with peafowl, but I don't think my methods would work there. I don't assist, because I have ended up culling 90% of all assisted hatches. I would rather let them die in the shell. Amy would rather know that she gave them every chance she could. She and I used to always end up on the same threads giving conflicting advice, but it was never argumentative. We would both give our opinions, then tell the OP to do whatever they were comfortable with. That's how this thread was born

4 of mine are silkies. They are the first ones in the coop and up on the roost...lol
This is going to be a Miami Dolphins cake....lol

I have to share the last two cakes I made for my son's bday: Last years I had to clean up some lines after taking the pic...lol but the Hulk hand is the modling chocolate. The 6th bday cake I just loved, one of the favs that I did. He pics his own cake and I try to wing it...lol

I have more pics here if anyone is inerested. Some I'm proud of, some not so much.....lol https://www.facebook.com/AmyLynnCampbell/media_set?set=a.1318631420152.44497.1661767211&type=3

You guys have to hear this! I got up at 4:30am to check on the pea chicks. The one I assisted was laying down flat, wing floppy & flipped back, head shaking and beak open. I thought he was basically dying. He was warm but lifeless in my hands. So I petted him and talked calmly to him. I kept dipping the tip of his beak in water with save-a-chick in it. Then I'd point his head back so he could swallow. I did this for about 15 mins. He couldn't sit or stand. So I just laid him back down. I went to go back to sleep for a couple hours. Thinking I'd have to bury him or worse put him down myself, in the morning. I questioned if I should have even got him out of the shell. But I realized since he was chirping in the shell he needed a chance. Well I woke up 2 hours later and he was standing, walking and drinking on his own! I couldn't believe my eyes! I showed him where the starter was and was poking at it with my finger and he started eating too! He's the biggest of the 3 and I can't believe the 180 in only 2 hours. He's even picking on his siblings! Wow-it's been a miracle!! Also I went to shut down the incubator. I had 2 eggs in there that I was 99.9% sure died before lockdown but kept them in the extra bator just incase of that .1%. Well I candled them and one is dead but one is moving!! The air cell is just drawing down now. It looks to be 2 days behind, developmentally, then the others. Is that possible if they were all set together? Ok, sorry about the novel! I'll stop rambling now!

My hubby built me a stable base to I can just set the egg on top of a light source and then use a flashlight from the top of the egg.
