I REALLY wanted to see the parade - can't you borrow some?
Believe me, nothing would please me more than to have Amy have to throw me a parade, but we can't set the precident of sub 90% hatches getting a parade. She got one because she hatched 100% in a death trap

One of my worst hatches was when I set 30 large dark olive eggs (some were extra large). At the time some suggested it wasn't a problem to do a second layer in the Octagon. But the eggs rolled to much and I think they were damaged as well as some underneath them. The eggs were too dark to candle. I wonder if I had weighed them would I have had handled it better.

It's called cat food for a reason :smack
My serious answer is it is probably way too high in protein and fat
:hide that's what I thought. My layers like to get on the cat's (yes, the cats have their own porch. They took it over when there were 15 at a time) porch and eat the cat food. Every day.

Ok cool.

Is cat food bad for chickens?

In anything other than small amount on an infrequent basis. I I put any cat food anywhere the chooks can get it they eat it all - even if they have scratch and pellets nearby.

The problem with that is that cats need a lot of sodium and the amounts in most cat foods will give a chicken a heart attack in short order as they do not deal well with it.

Some people raise their flock protein by adding cat food. I've been known to toss out a few handfuls (like scratch) during molts or in extended periods of sub zero weather. An other high protein supplement that folks use is pelleted fish food. Not saying it's right or wrong, just saying what some people do. I'm not too proud to use what ever is at my disposal when I want to beef up their feed. But, as a regular part of their diet... I'd not let them chow the cat food. Fat chickens are more prone to laying problems.

Silkie, I believe everyone gave accurate info about the cat food. And unless it high quality food, it just has a bunch of by-products in it anyway. I doubt a little here or there would hurt them too much, but it shouldn't be a large part of their diet.

Had 2 this morning, and I haven't totally given up on the others, but the timeline of this hatch has been consistent with past hatches. Any vigorous chicks left will hatch today. I will leave it running through tomorrow, and if any hatch they will start looking sticky, possibly have leg or feet issues. I will shut down tomorrow night, no matter what. I'm not saying this to look like mean Mr. Flock. This is how I hatch. I have had to cull almost every chick that hatched after day 23, and I hate killing fluffies. I would rather them die in the shell. The only difference with this batch is I will probably eggtopsy to see what happened. I usually don't even do that, but this is the first batch from my BCM, so I need to see if I did something wrong, or if the chicks weren't ready. The chicks that are out are the fattest, heaviest chicks I have ever seen. Maybe the remaining eggs weren't big enough

I totally understand and get that. I'm not looking forward to the day I have to put any chick down, for any reason. I'm not quite sure how I'll go about it...but dreading it none the less.

I will be setting another batch as soon as this hatch is over, so I get at least one more shot...

I should be setting Wednesday or Thursday the latest! I'm afraid to go up against you though. I think I'd look way more red then purple!! Plus you'd blow me put of the water. I'm gambling on shipped eggs in August!! I'm a glutton for punishment. :gig
