SC: don't you have at least 85% in your Brinsea???
I did...
I've never hatched 100%, but my silkies have. I've hatched as low as 50% and my silkies haven't. My silkies are at 85% because I am totally hands off with them. I don't mark eggs, so I don't remove eggs new to the nest. I get that percentage from unhatched eggs left in the nest. If I meticulously guarded their eggs and kept each girl on only the original eggs set I think their percentages would be north of 95%

I have a question I have an EE she is a little over a year old and has yet to lay a egg . the question is what will make a chicken unable to lay. I read that a Cornish cross if hatched late in year would not lay . so should I eat this chicken .even though she's the only pet of the bunch or give her more time . might have to scratch that wife and daughter say not no but with great emphasis no .so I'm stuck with this chicken.

Did she have access to layer feed or oyster shells as a youngster? The extra calcium can mess up their reproductive systems
Eta:spelling. Don't wanna give SC any fuel in the morning.

I'm trying not to do that so much....trying...

So did you stick it in your bra and let it finish hatching?

You girls have got to stop! I've had a minimum of 6 replies for every one of these

Yes I am

Hey SC, turns out, me silkies aren't the only androgynous things in my possession. These little pidgies can join the club, too!

I need some names that would suit for either gender. And nothing innapropes, please

ETA: Not the black one. He's a he and his name is Louis

I can't for 2 reasons.
1. You have much more fancy names than anything I would come up with
2. I don't do non innapropes
A few of the Chick combs. this group i think will all be the same comb type either the pea comb or the true recessive straight comb

The last one is blurry, but all the others look single to me

These 2 I'm hoping are rose or walnut combs

Top is rose, bottom is walnut

Talk about fussy birds. I fermented a kettle of wheat berries and offered it to the different populations yesterday.

Turkeys 12 weeks and up: gave the "here's a goody" call, tasted, then shook their heads and walked away in disgust after tasting.

Broilers: tasted, said they preferred grower crumble

Started pullets: the sky is falling.

Young chickens and turkeys: only the bantams showed any interest.

Laying hens: went NUTS for it. I'm scattering it like scratch.

So yeah, they can be as fussy as my daughter.

Names that work for either:
Lynn/Lynne
Ashley (it's a male name in the UK)
Sidney/Sydney
Sam(uel)/Sam(antha)
Sasha (male name in Russia)
Leslie
Charlie (for Charles/Charlotte)
Hildie (Hildebrandt/Hidegarde)
Nicky/Nikki
Tony/Toni
Johny/Joanne
Jacky/Jackie
That's just off the top of my head, but I'm tired and can't think of any more (and refuse to Google names when I'm not needing them myself and, at 41, am not planning on needing any;) )
Oh I love those! Thanks! The bold ones are my favorites. Now to just place a name to the bird
SC, you're probably right.

IKR?! (That was for you, SC :gig ) my pigeons are so picky with their feed, (they love peanut butter banana sandwiches) so whatever they don't eat I give to the ducks. They eat anything but not bread or crackers. We're trying to make sprouted barley but I've got a feeling the chickens are gonna hate it.

She could just be barren, like some people can be. At least she's a nice bird.

Does candling happen on day 7 or day 10? Also since I dont have a candler which would work better a regular flashlight or an LED?
It can happen every single day if you want it to.
