Someone was talking about Mareks recently on this thread. I ran across this today.

This chicken vaccine makes its virus more dangerous

“Previously, a hot strain was so nasty, it wiped itself out. Now, you keep its host alive with a vaccine, then it can transmit and spread in the world,” Read said. “So it’s got an evolutionary future, which it didn’t have before.”

“One way to look at that experiment is that shows vaccinating birds kills unvaccinated birds. The vaccination of one group of birds leads to the transmission of a virus so hot that it kills the other birds, said Read said. “If you vaccinate the mothers, the same thing happens. The offspring are protected by the maternal antibodies of the mother and that allows the virus in the chicks to transmit before they kill the host. So they transmit and kill the other individuals.”

By the end of the article they still recommend the vaccine.

This is one of the coolest things I've ever witnessed. I let the girls out and Punkin, my young EE, went right for them! The older, more laid back Big Guy, dark brahma, was more of a gentleman. One hen squatted for Big Guy, but Punkin saw it and a square-off ensued. After they settled down some, I peeked around the corner and Big Guy had escorted one of the girls to the wood line. I saw her submit, and he was very gentle with her. 3 seconds and he was done! Lol
So now the girls are flocking around Big Guy and poor Punkin keeps chasing. I thought Punkin would be the roo to keep, but now it looks like if one has to go, poor Punkin is out of luck. This will be some good entertainment tonight.
