She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

I know guys! I said I'm not there "yet". I am fortunate enough that I haven't had a predator kill any of my chickens yet. I grew up working with my mom as a wildlife rehabilitator. So we would have tons of different wildlife in and out of the house that we were trying to keep alive. I took over when she got sick, and I've saved all kinds of babies. Bunnies, squirrels, raccoons, skunks, various wild birds, etc. So, it's very engrained in me to preserve life. But, I'm sure as my years of chicken keeping increase, I will harden up and sing a different tune.

My update is that my eggs have arrived in NY, they flew into Stewart Air Force base, which kinda surprised me. But I can pick them up at the post office after 11am. I need to buy a bag of ice when I go out, so I can re-calibrate my thermometers. I stuck a thermometer that I calibrated about 2 months ago in the incubator, just to see and it's reading about .8 of a degree lower then what my incubator says. I'm not sure if it's still accurate though. Could .8 of a degree low, kill eggs? I'll know more this afternoon. The 2 quail eggs have not internally pipped yet. Looks like one quit because light passes through a bit right under the air cell/membrane. The other egg is a solid black mass. So I don't know what's going on with them. They are hard to candle. But I do know I will be setting these shipped eggs tomorrow morning. So they better get a move on it, the clocks ticking for them. I'm going back to re-read hatching 101. So I can be especially thorough with this batch and not miss a single thing that may make it harder for them to make it. I've very curious to see how the air cells did on the flight. By the time I pick them up, they'll have been in transit less then 24 hours. :fl

Boy, I bet the guy at the feed store loved it whenever you & Mom rolled up! I'm not that big on killing, either (unless I intend to eat it), but I figure relocating a pest just puts the problem onto someone else, if the pest doesn't return to where you trapped it, & I sure don't want to take a chance on getting sprayed.

Sweet! Hurry up little quail... Your spot is about to be taken over!!

Let us know how the new eggs look. I'm so excited for you!

Be even cuter in a permanently horizontal position!

Ewww
This I agree with!

I appreciate cuteness, I just know how nasty they are, and they lost their cuteness to me with their stench!

Not to mention they will go after chickens and ducks!

Nope, SC was just telling me the same thing, been doing research, they say use a non petrolem lube and like i said i cut it off for now, until i can do all i can do.

I would lube it, and as long as it is still turning I would run it until it stops
Thanks for the help, and yeah, we all have our skeletons. I think I actually have a graveyard, lol, but it's good to talk about it. I myself am an open book, as y'all saw earlier, lol
Anyone that has read my posts on this thread knows that there is about a 42 year old trail of skeletons over here

Oooo, tell us all how to deal with a skunk without getting sprayed! PLEASE?

Day 14 update. 32 eggs set. 6 were clear, 2 have quit. So 24 still looking great! (13 golden sebrights, 1 silver sebright, 6 BTBJ, 4 SD OEGB)

I also realized that one of the clears, and one of the quitters were 2 eggs that she pulled while I was there picking up the eggs, so they were laid the day I set them.

I weighed a few too (I wish I'd quit doing that!) and the weight loss is a bit high, but the air cells look fine, so I'm not touching anything yet. But maybe if these don't do well, next time I will increase the humidity a bit, if the weight loss is that high.

What part of "set and forget" are you missing?

Anyway to do that in a have-a-heart trap? I'm not at the point of killing anything yet. I may get there, especially if something kills my babies. But I'm not there yet.

When using a have-a-heart, I switch to this one. It's easier on the trap

You watch a varmint tear the breast off one of your chickens, and you'll be more than willing to kill by any means possible. With bare hands if necessary.

If I could have gotten my hands on the hay bale I would have bitten its head off

So today starts day 25. Going to toss the duds and remove the turner. I didnt see any movement when I candled Sunday so I am hoping for at least 1 to hatch. If not I think I am going to wait until February/March to try again.
