She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

Sally I think is rarely on anymore, and Oz is in the Philes this week... wait til at least next week to ask him, he is with his family now... and 'net reception is crappy there...

Oz can take jokes just fine (ask him about Argentinian Blue Lake duck, lol) just not on his own thread... let him know that adult jokes are the norm and he should be fine...
I think an evening with Sally and Oz would be just the ticket.

Sally just came back she has been quite ill. But I saw her on her shipped eggs thread a couple of days ago
I knew she'd been off, but didn't know she's been sick. I do hope all is well with her now. I did talk to her yesterday, I think.

Good points!

Speaking of shaking an egg and scrambling it.... I watched a video the other evening of "life hacks"... you know, those guys that try to figure out ways to do things easier/quicker. There were several things related to eggs. Like "frying" one in the microwave, etc. But the particular one that struck me was they took an egg, and placed it in the center of a long sleeve, grabbed one end in each hand, and twirled it around about 15 times. Kinda like a jump rope, with the egg in the middle. Then they boiled it, or cooked in the microwave, and when peeled, it was totally scrambled! All one shade of pale yellow.

So what happens, in regards to incubation, if the yolk gets busted during shipping? Is that an automatic goner? (I've never tried shipped eggs, obviously!)
Gonner. May as well serve it up for breakfast.

Yes, you have mentioned this before. And my first box of eggs had nothing on them. They came in great shape! The only reason that I did not request that this time is because I paid for express shipping and was hoping if the box said "live embryos" it would get put in a pressurized part of the plane. I think I said that right, is that the part of the plane for animals/people?
I understand. I, too, am very attached to my rooster. He stays, no matter what! Lol I'm hoping to really narrow down what I have next year and keep researching how to breed. It all is a lot to learn!
Winter is a great time to do your research. I spent from the first summer to the following Feb. researching, before I set eggs to hatch my first flock.

If their rep is to be believed, about the worst that would've happened is that you drowned from him slobbering all over you.
Rep is not all it's cracked up to be. My son was once bit by his friend's St. Bernard.

I saw my first internal pip!!! :weee
I know that seems trivial to most of you but I've been looking for months and always missed it! It wasn't a chicken egg but I checked the quail egg and it was moving in my hand and then when I candled I clearly saw it the little triangle near the top of the air cell and could see how the membrane was broken. I'm going to up humidity and pray this thing hatches by morning!

In egg news, I weighed and set exactly half the eggs. The rest were collected on Saturday and Sunday, so I should be good to set them tomorrow right? I'm really happy I waited as long as I did to set them (30 hrs). I don't know if the air cells reattached or firmed up because I didn't even tilt the eggs but all the air cells were in the fat end. This is actually kinda cool because if any hatch, it will be two days of hatching!! :fl

I was trying to do some research today in regards to shipping practices with eggs and I just read about people using toilet paper!! The receivers were definitely not happy. How far did your eggs have to travel?
Mine went from Jersey to mid east Va. All mine looked fine when I got them. I checked the sellers feedback and it was 100%, everybody raved about how their eggs looked great and they had good hatch rates, 50%+.

Ruby, we're only talking a 2 day overlap with quail and shipped eggs. This is what I'd do: I'd put the quail egg in a container with a damp paper towel, perhaps wait to add the damp paper towel until the quail starts cheeping or has an external pip. Keep him in the bator. Go ahead and add your shipped eggs. A day or two of extra humidity won't be a deal breaker for them. My understanding is that humidity issues are a cumulative thing, not an issue for momentary highs and lows. So, give the quail the benefit of the doubt, and go ahead and set your other eggs. Hopefully, by keeping quail egg in a container (be sure it has plenty of ventilation) with your humidity source in the container, it won't kick up the humidity in the rest of the bator too much.

How cool is that to see the internal pip! Awesome about the amount of research you've been doing and I'm hoping you remember it all so I can ask you questions next time I order eggs. (If I ever do.)

For a bright note on a really horrible day, look what I found in the run:

First Marans Egg!

Cool on the internal pip and glad the eggs look better! :)

I agree, Ruby will be my go-to if/when I ever do shipped eggs, just because she has researched till she must be turning blue (in the other blue sense of the word!) Gorgeous marans egg! Congrats! (and your countertop looks exactly like mine! Lol)

I'm sorry you had a bad day!! Those eggs look awesome! The marans is cool but those green eggs are awesome too!!! So many chickens to choose from & not enough room. Down the road when I have more space and time, I'd like green eggs!
