She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

Aww, that's great!! Congratulations!!! That must be so exciting! I remember your first chicken egg and now duck egg!! Trust me, I can imagine how excited you are!! What kind of duck is Juice, again?

Thanks... I had been told that she may not lay until next spring, so I wasn't really expecting eggs this year. But I'm super happy about it.

They are Swedish. Juice is in the front. The sweet part is she was my very first hatchling... ever!

I have a question about this quail egg. One more hour will be 12 hours since initial external pip. He's made no progress. There's not even a hole yet, just the crack so I can't see the guy. I know he could be resting but unfortunately due to the circumstances, he's on a time crunch. Is it horrible to take the egg out and make sure he's still alive? I don't want to keep waiting if there's no point. Would I hear peeping or any other indication he's alive, if I took it out for a sec?? Would it make him shrink wrap?

I know nothing about hatching quail.... can you encourage it to make some noise? shake it around a little? poke it through a vent hole?

Good Morning!
I haven't checked lately, but in years gone by you could visit sites like dogsunlimited.com and find small recall pens that would comfortably house a few quail, then copy the basic design to suit yourself. I built mine out of 2x2's & 1/2" hardware cloth for a run about 12" square x 4' long & what amounted to a run-in shed on the end. Real simple.

Thanks! I will check those out as soon as I can

I think an evening with Sally and Oz would be just the ticket.
I guess I could behave for a bit. I get pretty serious if I have to, like with my mentor, snowbird

For a bright note on a really horrible day, look what I found in the run:

First Marans Egg!
Those greens are gorgeous! Wow!
Olive Eggers, or do you just have exceptional EEs?

Hey, I thought your timing was awesome! lol and seeing SC scared is fun...

Great pic! Are you incubating on the side? Not that there's anything wrong with it, I have just always had so many eggs that I had to load upright. I assume that you know that if you have a bunch of eggs, they can be loaded pointy end down to fit more in.
Exactly! One thing I'll miss about the mini when I get a bigger incubator is the dome! You can literally watch at eye level!
The octagon has a pretty good view

That's one exhausted but very happy rooster!

Happy? 100 times a day hearing "Where have you been? Do you think she's prettier than me? You're not wearing that, are you?"

All I can think is "Cujo".
I have been picturing being trapped in a car ever since your first post on this issue

Well my overly crowing cockerel problem will probably not last too much longer. I went in to the run to close the people door to the shed, and the little **** dropped his wing and slammed into the back of my calf. I pushed him away with my foot and continued locking up. Went to check on my hurt Legbar (just looked at her in her hiding spot from 10 feet away, and the ****** full on tried to spur me in the back of the calf while my back was turned. Glad he doesn't have any spurs!

Cock fighting big there?
Don't even mention that on this website. Quickest way to get a thread shut down

I keep telling myself i have Too Much to learn before i spend that much money on Eggs...
Stick around until the spring. There's going to be a shipathon

Also, Amy, check on your local Craigslist. I found this on mine yesterday and it would be perfect for breeding 3/4 pairs. Even worth it to disassemble for one or two cages.

Ruby, your quail is a bonus, since you didn't really expect him to hatch. I'd just ignore that lil egg in the corner, perhaps put some moist PT around him, and go about your business setting your shipped eggs. Yes, you can check to see if he's still alive.

Supposed to be Ameraucana x Cuckoo Marans. Ended up laying a light olive. The blue one is from a legbar.

Doesn't happen much, but for some reason I am terrified of Friday

You are not, you faker!

You're near Newburgh, huh? Ever run across a family named Regerro? They were IBMer's who got transferred down here, where I met them. They've since moved back there. I witnessed one of them get married there, & buried him there later...my very best friend back then.

I have Ams and cuckoos. I may have to try that. Little Butt Tate will hopefully be getting some ams this spring, so I'm curious to see what those offspring will lay. I haven't even seen an Am egg yet. I'm thinking late October before they start laying
