Well, in case you can't make a parade, how about a smack down?

24 turkey eggs set refrigerated up to 4 weeks at 34F

8 viable at 10 days

5 made it to week 3

2 were alive at lockdown

2 hatched unassisted in the Eco 20 and are healthy, happy buggers.

That deserves a big hug instead of a smack down, for sure! Its actually pretty amazing that 2 made it!!

I can't do a smackdown for low hatches, that's just adding insult to injury.
Why were they refrigerated? Did you do that knowing that you would be holding them for a while before incubation?

They were destined for egg noodles, but having all these Brinseas sitting around changed my mind. They'd have been better used as pasta...but the two babies are beautiful.

I have good news!! There is this small farm in NJ, that I found on brinsea's website (believe it or not) long before I ever hatched. Beautiful silkies and only 3 hours away. I wanted my very first eggs from there. When I contacted the woman she said she incubates what her girls lay but I could stay in touch. So every other month I shoot her an email (she's really nice). But she never has any extra eggs. Last night she messaged me that her incubator is full and her girls laid 11 eggs yesterday. She said if I wanted them, she'd collect whatever was laid this morning and send them out by lunch time today!!! So I have eggs coming!! e

I semi-agree, but I did assist 2 that are doing perfectly.  I think it depends on the reason for the assist.  One was zipping the wrong end, but in the proper direction, so I knew he was just backwards in the shell.  I think he just ran out of room in the pointy end, so I helped finish the zip, and peeled of the stuck membrane.  The other zipped such a wide line, his leg pushed out and was having trouble rotating with a leg out, so I helped it finish zipping and it was fine.  I can't tell which 2 they are now.


Bahahahaha  I was about to say "read on!"    Sadly, this one isn't going to pull through.  I removed the rest of the air cell, and put some Vaseline on him, and got some of the membrane out of the way, but he never has tried to push out.  It looks like proper position, but I can't tell for sure.  I turned off the bator at 2:30 am, but he was still breathing when I left for work.  I have read several "trash can" hatches lately, so I left him in the bator, but I expect he will give up soon.   

Well hopefully by the time you get home it will be out. I am going to be starting up again in November. So I can have some pullets for spring time and hopefully I will have some chicks ready too!!! I need to find someone close who has EE or Ameraucana eggs for hatching. And I am not sure what else I want....I need another couple of polish hens for Zax...so I can hatch and sell babies.

I'll be making it with chicken eggs instead...not as good a noodle quality, but good enough.

All my infertile incubated eggs go to a lady who does pysanky art...she blows them out and hand paints them with amazing geometric patterns.

She gave him more of a chance than I would. I've tossed cheeping eggs out...
if I feel there is a good chance they will die or have issues anyway, its easier to let them die in the shell than to have to cull them a few days later

Ruby, if the chick can't hatch, it is emotionally less draining to let it die in the shell. Hugs, WV

I can cull them but I do not like to. I am becoming more hands off with every hatch.

Meaties are terrible that way. We raised 75 of them this year, indoors, and will not raise more than 25 at a time due to wet mess and their tendency to pile in corners, even when grown.

Turning the lights off all night made for drier coops and healthier birds. It did not slow down their growth at all, so I think they just keep eating whether hungry or not. Though on processing day I did get stampeded by a couple of the hungry boys (18 hours off feed), they made it to the door at a dead run then plopped down to rest.

I dont have water in the coop, these dont seem to pile at all as they have been all over the brooder and now the run. we dont have lights on at all, I leave the pallet coop door open all day to help it dry out while they are all out in the run. I didnt know some kept lights on them all the time. They attack for food dont they! Now I know how to tame all the birds, dont feed the regular flock for two days and they will come running to me! ha ha ha

It's been extremely slow this week. This thread usually moves 100 mph, but everyone is off, especially me

My OCD won't let me accept the silence, my passive aggressiveness won't let me read without replying, and my narcissism needs the attention, but even scflock has to work sometimes

It will get back to form, soon, and the bad part is that after I have been pent up for so long there is no telling what might happen

ETA: The personality profiles are fun, and I haven't done one in a while, so I will get a roundup for Sally as soon as I get time
